• Force parallel port mode

I have a ~15 year old A2 inkjet printer here (Epson Stylus Color 1520) which has a somewhat broken parallel controller. Basically, Windows prints mojibake no matter what, and when printing via echo in Linux, only even numbered ASCII characters are outputted. I believe this either means one of the data lines is fucked, or the handshake to enter nibble mode (which it uses exclusively) is failing. Hoping that the latter is the problem, how can I force Linux to skip the handshake and print in nibble mode? I have tried numerous computers and parallel cables as well as a USB-Parallel converter with no change, so the printer is almost certainly at fault. And A2 colour printers aren't exactly easy to get hold of.
Well if you think the parallel connector is broken, why don't you take the printer apart and see if it has any broken solder joints? Easy fix with a soldering iron.

It's an absolute bitch to disassemble though - you have to do all sorts of lubricating and resetting and shit just to get past the mechanical bit and into the circuitry. (At least according to the service manual) Also disregard that shit about 'nibble' mode in the OP, I am a retard, the printer is supposed to use EPP/ECP mode according to the manual so I'm pretty much screwed without a hardware fix :saddowns:
