I would like to point out that unless every single car did this, it'll do nothing to minimize car accidents. Probably the opposite since computers can't know and hit the brakes before a guy who you see is obviously about to pull right out in front of you, when you can

Without starting somewhere, we'll never reach the point where almost every car has this...which is actually an era that I believe will eventually happen - just not quickly. Until then, though, obviously you would want to pay attention to the road when riding in a self-driving car. You can take manual control, so nothing's stopping you from slamming the breaks yourself in that kind of situation. Of course then there's blind people and such using this technology, but until the supposed age of everyone having self-driving cars (or rather, cars that can communicate with other cars), I don't see it being legal yet for a blind person to be on the road anyway. [editline]fuck[/editline] And there's also this:
The technology is designed to be used in conjunction with a driver
It's not yet ready to be used to sit back and not pay attention while the car drives itself. It's just meant to make driving easier and safer.

It'll be able to compensate for pretty much every environmental change before its released. And I'm sure it'll still require a competent driver behind the wheel. It could help a lot.

I don't think this is even a question of whether it can drive safely. Google has proven to us that it's safer than the average driver. If we have a problem with google's car we should have a problem with our own citizens.

Now we should make some self driving horses

Probably the opposite since computers can't know and hit the brakes before a guy who you see is obviously about to pull right out in front of you, when you can
The cars use lasers and other sensors to scan the area around the car hundreds of times every second, so there wouldn't be any blind spots, and would be able to apply the breaks more quickly as it has a much faster reaction time then a human.
Unless it'll automatic pull the handbrake around a sharp corner and do burnout's at stoplight's, then I won't be interested.

Probably the opposite since computers can't know and hit the brakes before a guy who you see is obviously about to pull right out in front of you, when you can
To be honest a high speed camera can have far faster reaction time than a human. e.g. I agree that a sort of driving intuition would be lacking, but I'm not sure how often that really stops an accident vs having quick reaction time and a 100% alert driver.
Will it actually calculate how icy the road can be on winter?

The godamn robots john!
I don't trust self-driving cars. You never know when they're going to fuck up and kill you by accident.
I don't trust self-driving cars. You never know when they're going to fuck up and kill you by accident.
Computers are far, far more reliable than people.
