It's funny how there is no reason to own L4D1 anymore.

I bought L4D, trusting Valve not to make me pay for a beta and leave it to die.
When L4D2 came around I've been too pissed to buy it since.
L4D2 was probably Valve's biggest mistake. Coming out a year after the first one and charging full price for it, it should of just been an expansion really. I don't even believe either of the L4Ds warrant their $50US release price, once you finish the campaigns, there's really nothing else to do.

I don't understand all the hate on L4D2. Yes, it came out only one year after L4D1 but it came with more new weapons than L4D1 had, four new (in my opinion even more) memorable characters with even more voice files than the other four, five long campaigns whereas L4D1 only had four, new unique themes without reusing too many models from the first game, new gameplay features like melee weapons or ammo- and precision-upgrades, two new gamemodes, a unique soundtrack for each campaign and new special infected. In total it had more content than the first game. If you want it as an expansion, why is Portal 2 no expansion for Portal 1?
I understand when people get mad at Tropico 4, the Dungeons sequel or the new Worms game but Valve delivered enough new content and it's well worth the money in my opinion. You can't get everything as a free DLC.
Also I do profit from the campaign conversion to L4D2 because I only have the cut version of L4D1.

Neither there is anything to do after playing L4D1, Half Life, Portal or every map in TF2, DOD or CS if you go by that argument.

The difference offered by L4D1 and L4D2 is that all the maps are closed in and linear, and un-like games like Zombie Master (which also offers open maps) there isn't very much variety. It's just running from A to B, fighting a few scripted crescendos and encountering a few infected on the way. AI director is a wank in L4D1 and 2, and neither use it to its full potential.
Also L4D2 barely introduced any new concepts, the only ones being a few more special infected, melee only weapons and the scavenger game mode. A game like Portal 2 introduced tonnes of new gameplay dynamics (the different gels) and co-op as well as a far longer single player portion. It also has far more modding potential.

I agree that the director should alter the level more and levels should be more open in general. But doesn't it (Versus mode maybe) offer more variety than a game of DOD, CSS or even TF2? Isn't it in the same category? Isn't Portal or Half Life the same running from A to B? And yet we play it again from time to time even though we know exactly what will happen. Also it offers multiple difficulties. In comparison to Half Life they even make a notable difference. And if you want some halfway open levels and typical gameplay rounds you can play survival or scavenge.

Portal made such a huge leap because the original was just basically a small indie game that was short and simple where as Portal 2 was meant to be a full $50 mainstream game
Left 4 Dead 1 was already at the point and didn't have much higher to go.
fuck yeah, i love l4d1 campaings
L4D2 was a test. Just like Portal.
But unlike the smashing success of Portal, L4D2 wasn't so hot with the community.
People were pissed off at l4d2 because well, look at valves track of the majority of their sequels, HL1->HL2, TF1->TF2, Portal1->Portal2, etc.. I'm not just talking about the engine updates, but gameplay wise all these sequels offer another level of experience that couldn't be gained by a simple update to the first one.
Where as L4D1 could have easily had an expansion pack that was L4D2.. Adding new characters, weapons and maps isn't a hard thing to do to a game, and that simple addon doesn't really deserve another full fledged price tag on top of it.
I think that L4D2 was a disappointment in the long run, but still fun while it lasted. Also CS:GO migt have the same fate if they decide it's going to be worth a full $50-60 for it.
"Won't get fooled twice. Better safe than sorry."
Churchguy made a generic campaign something to remember.

L4D > L4D2
The Left 4 Dead characters were ported over to Left 4 Dead 2.
You know, despite all the bitching on both sides and generally how stupid the whole thing was, pretty much all the fears of the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott group came to pass.
Not amused how all the maps in deathtoll have been changed. The church has 3 new giant gaping holes in it for the infected
I don't know about you guys, but I'm glad I never bought the original Left 4 Dead, and decided to wait for Left 4 Dead 2 to go on sale before buying it.
Whatever qualms you guys may have, I love playing L4D2 LAN. Survival and Realism Expert Campaign all the way. :v:
If you're going to get this upset about the $50 you spent on a game 3 years ago, maybe you should stop and go worry about something meaningful instead, like school or bills. Things that actually matter beyond 'I want to shoot zombies this weekend.'
If that's not enough, you likely have other games to play. Games published by much less honest companies who charge much more on release, don't ever offer free DLC, and abandon the titles within months.

What fears? That L4D2 would be too similar to the original to warrant a full release?

That Valve would ignore Left 4 Dead 1 and only update L4D2? That they would stop patching it? That they would basically never mention it again? With the exception of The Sacrifice all of those things happened.
I bought L4D, I enjoyed playing it until L4D2 game out. Then I bought L4D2 and still play it off and on to this day, both were well worth my money, even if there's no point having L4D1 now. I do not regret buying.
You guys don't feel bad at all that Valve just jipped you for L4D2? Valve fanboyism aside, I am. Imagine the outcome if some other company released like EA or Activision.
I earn my money and that $50 wasn't worth a few maps and weapons. Even more when they release a reskin for the same amount of money. The fuck?
I own L4D and L4D2, But i mainly play L4D because of the Australian Government
This is why I always wait till Steam has a sale on their games to buy them. In fact, I haven't bought a Valve game at full price, ever. I bought L4D1-2 for a combined price of less than $50 actually. Only had to wait a few months at most for each one to go on sale after their respective releases. Did I miss the huge wave? Yeah. I also don't feel ripped off and felt I got exactly what I paid for. L4D1-2 were never $50 games to me, so I refused to pay that for them.
A little research on the game and some patience goes a long ways.
I hear the bells. Are they laying L4D to rest now?
In all fairness to the people whining about L4D being dead and L4D2 taking over. L4D2 is cheaper than full price now. Not to mention you could easily try to grab it in a sale. I honestly don't see the problem here.

Nope. I didn't get jipped, either, because apparently unlike most people I knew what I was buying.
Really, with all the boycott shit and the L4D megathread there's no way people didn't know how similar the games were. If you knew, and bought the game anyway, it makes you sound stupid when you complain about it.
Here, I've tried to come up with an analogy. You want to buy a car. All the reviews online state the car is almost identical to the previous model year that you own, but you want it anyway, so you buy it. Then, you complain to the dealership that the car wasn't worth $20,000 because there isn't enough new stuff in it, even though you went in having read those reviews.
L4D2 was a test. Just like Portal.
Portal: Came with two games you were going to buy anyway for $20.
L4D: $50.
I like both games but I feel completely ripped off that all the content from L4D1 is now in L4D2. I recall when I bought it thinking "okay, so there's only four campaigns but Valve will release more", then all we got was a lighthouse and Crash Course before L4D2 was released. Now there's literally no reason to own it except for leg viewmodels, it may as well be trash.
