• Using almost double RAM on boot, what?

My computer usually boots using 1.2 GB of RAM, as expected for Windows 7. Recently, it has booted using 2 GB or more, and I can't track down why...here are the specs, if that changes anything. System: Dell Inspiron 518 (don't even quote "DELL" and say that's the issue) Processor: Intel 2.33 GHz Quad Core RAM: 4 GB DDR2 (motherboard only supports 4 GB :( ) Here are some pictures, as yuo can see, only Steam is running. If you want pictures from boot, I can go get some, but again, take my word for it...it's the same.
Have you added any big programs on startup or installed some more drivers? It should be fine if it uses around 2GB of RAM. You have 4 gigs

Virus? Other than that I'm out of ideas.
So what would be my best option, formatting the thing? [editline]26th October 2010[/editline] Virus...I don't think so, I don't get viruses. I'm not retarded.
2GB is normal, Maybe you just installed something and didn't remember.
You don't have an antivirus? Anyways, mine starts up with around 1.8 GB / 6 GB memory "used", so it seems pretty normal to me. Maybe an update recently changed something having to do with memory management of Windows? I have no clue.
Used to have Trend Micro trial, it expired. [editline]26th October 2010[/editline] I've never really had an Anti Virus, and never gotten a virus, so... Recommendations for tracking a virus down? [editline]26th October 2010[/editline] [QUOTE=Joker169;25666681]2GB is normal, Maybe you just installed something and didn't remember.[/QUOTE] Like I said, I usually run at 1.2GB, sometimes 1.4 GB, not 2 GB.

You never know until you actually search for one.
Suggestions for an Anti Virus then?
If you don't have comcast for an ISP then you can try AVG, Microsoft security essentials, or comodo internet security (possibly the best software of these, but lots of alerts)
I've got Comcast (lucky me), but I heard Norton blows.... opinion?
Oh good. Norton is your best bet then. The new Norton does not blow. It actually is one of the best now. [editline]27th October 2010[/editline] I'm using it also
Holy crap, 108MB for SVCHost? How many fucking services do you have running? Your best bet is to clear up your fucking "autostart" applications. You can change this by going to msconfig, and disabling items under "startup". If you feel really ballsy, you can turn off services if you know what you're doing.
Did a full scan of my computer with Comcast's Norton, it's using about 150 MB less, but still in the 1.7 GB range instead of 1.2 GB. Issue is, I'm not sure what I'm doing with my autostart applications...can you lend me a hand on Teavmiewer, or link me to something, or some shit like that?
Run >msconfig.exe >Under general tab, "selective start up" should be selected >unclick "load start up items". Reboot >check your ram usage/processes. If you need a few startup's run msconfig again and go under the start up tab and select only the ones you need >apply, reboot. I wouldn't touch anything else in msconfig, it can really fuck your system up
I love you, since it worked so well, maek that I love you in a very homosexual way. [img]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5648925/photos/iloveyou.png[/img]
No, no, NO! Don't use Norton! It's an insane resource hog. To clear any virus/malware, boot into Safe Mode and run Avast! and MBAM.
LOL will try, thanks.
