my computer won't let me shrink the volume so that I can install Ubuntu to dual boot with xp. What's wrong?

XP doesnt support shrinking via disk management.
Fire up the Ubuntu installer, you can resize current partitions from there when you get to the partitioning stage.
ok i'll try that

ok I Have the ubuntu installer going on my computer i'm trying to install it on, and whenever I try to partition my drive it pops up with an error: resize operation failure, aborted.
What I tried to do is edit my main partition, to shrink it so that I could make an ubuntu partition
it's dev/sda1 file system ntfs if that helps
Open up windows right click on the drive and tell it to run checkdisc next time you boot.
I had a drive that refused to be resized until I did this. If Gparted finds any ntfs errors it will abort the operation. typically it is cyclinders miscounts and etc...
Also you cannot resize an actively mounted partition. I would suggest EASEUS Partition manager if you are trying to do the resize from within windows.
**btw what is your background in windows? I like it**
I used easeus partition manager and it screwed up my computer, which I started another thread on. man.
now I get this stuff about hal.dll is corrupt or missing please re-install it.
