I got 2 cavities getting filled tomorrow, and I haven't had any since i was like 6. I'm shitting myself after hearing from my dentist that your gum gets shot. What the fuck is this? How badly does the shot hurt? Whatabout the drilling process. I'd like to hear some recent experience here about it
Just try and fall asleep, that's what i do, it works great and you don't feel a thing
It depends on how deep the cavities are and where they are on the tooth. If your dentist is good, you won't even feel the Novocain shot and they put some stuff on to numb it up anyway. I didn't bother with Novocain the last filling I got, not because I'm edgy but because it didn't hurt all that much. Basically they numb you up, then you feel some pressure and hear a whiny drill for a bit, then you're done and all afternoon you'll feel like you're drooling but that's as bad as it gets. Also the drill/tooth dust smells really funky but it's not too horrible.

I guess they just give you shot that makes part of your face go numb and not feel anything, even pain. As long as they do not hit a nerve, it should be fairly painless.
Got a couple of them filled before and the worst part is over after the shot's done, excluding the process of getting the cavity filled as it might be a bit awkward with several tools in your mouth at once :v:
From what I heard it's the far back teeth on the lower jaw. And it's not that big. Should I tell them to not give me the novocain as well? Getting needle in my gum sounds terrifying
It doesn't hurt at all, and I've had some really deep cavities. Not even the novocaine shot hurts either, because they made me put some cotton swab with a numbing paste in my mouth beforehand.
I've had about 4-6 cavities filled so far, each with Novocaine or whatever it is they inject. The worst part is the few second sting from the needle, and if you're terrified about the needle, the dentist can numb the part where they will sting. After a few minutes when the numbing really kicks in, you wont even feel the drill. And your mouth will stay numb for an hour or so, so try not to bite your lip off. On the plus side, it sounds really silly trying to speak with half your mouth unconscious :V:
this one time, I saw blood splatter and a soul wrenching scream in a doctors office
you're fucked OP
[sp]you'd have to be stoned to take this serious[/sp]
I've gotten 6 cavities iirc and you don't even feel a thing, you will feel the vibrations from the drill and sometimes that can be uncomfortable however.

Yea, this is how it was when I got my cavity filled. You don't feel the needle go in because the gums have already been numbed a bit beforehand. The drilling doesn't hurt either.
yes it hurts and there's a 60% risk of the drill going through your tooth and into your head. also, the anesthetic may permanently paralyze your jaw if it's not done right.
It usually doesn't hurt. That's if you have healthy gums.
Without Novocain the drilling hurts like a bitch, but when you get the shot. it's not to bad
I'm kinda resistant to Novocain so....just imagine feeling a tool slowly drill into your tooth. :suicide:
For me, the needle is actually one of the less worse bits.
Hey, we can be cavity buddies or something. I'm getting one filled in tomorrow too. Trust me, it ain't too bad, definitely not as bad as getting teeth pulled, that's for sure. You mostly won't feel it, but it might be slightly sensitive (not really painful mind you, just sensitive) after you are done for a few days.
I had two filled recently (a few weeks between) in the very back of my mouth. Both upper teeth.
The first one was fairly large, but all they did was rub a swab over the injection area and stick the needle in after the surface numbing agent sets in. All you feel is a tiny pinch. And then you sit there for like 20 minutes while they wait for the Novocain to completely set in so you get the least painful experience possible.
The tools they use to smooth and clean out the cavity areas may be scary at first, and even if they snag your gums, you shouldn't feel anything at all. I know I didn't. The smallest one makes a funny squeaky noise.
Tip for the needle, when you see it, just close your eyes. Pretend it's just a random nerve twinge that's making the pinching feeling. It helped me a lot because I can't stand needles either.
I'd say the worst thing about getting a filling that's not an entire root canal procedure is the taste of the Novocane that leaks out during injection. Shit tastes awful. After that's passed, it's all smooth going from there.
Oh and the insta-dry light they use to solidify the filling is pretty neat, too. If you've ever had braces, it's the same light they use to dry the paste that holds the brackets to your teeth.
It's not that bad, the needle stings for a sec, but your gums aren't that sensitive to pain. The worst part is drooling everywhere from the anesthetic making you lose control of half your face. Actually the worst part is the sound of the drill. Never had this happen to me before, but i've heard stories of times when a dentist hit the nerve in someone's tooth with the drill. It was pretty funny trying to talk to people afterwards, since the Novocaine made half of my tongue numb.
nope
its hella uncomfortable though
the worst kind of pain that happens is some slight coldness
first they put this wierd fruity toothpick in your mouth and it numbs, then they give ya the shot, then you see bits of your tooth flying out of your mouth. And you don't feel a thing.
Nah cavities are fine man, they quick too.
This shit right here is why I brush my fucking teeth.
My teeth are probably weak as shit, and Ive probably had half of them filled already due to cavities. In my experience, the needle sting hurts a bit, and it leaves a weird taste in your mouth. Your mouth slowly loses its feeling and then from there it wont be too bad. If they dont have anesthetic, which happened to me a couple of times it can hurt a bit, but youll survive, everybody does. Dont be a pussy

Just be glad it isn't an Army dentist. I had a few not-really-cavities-but-we'll-fill-them-just-to-be-safe-because-loltricare and the dentist didn't put on enough of the numbing gel. He then proceeded to give me 7 shots of various anesthetics, in multiple locations in my gums. And the anesthetics didn't kick in until half way through, and then they were still active for about an hour or so after he finished.
