I'm not sure if this is in the wrong section or not BUT
I'm going to buy a PS2 and I was wondering which is better, the Fat version or the Slim version?
I just want to know the ups and downs of both, I did some research on the internet and all I could find were people saying the Slim version was better because it's smaller and makes less noise, but I constantly see people here saying that the Fat version is better, so I can't decide.
You're going to be playing loud games anyway so console noise is usually not a problem.
I've had a fat one for years and it's never let me down yet
I would go for the fat one pure for the more 'nostalgic' feel.
Besides, from reading the wiki there could be a few games where that are not running well on the Slim version due to compatibility issues (Slim has a new chipset).
Go fat :v:

Had 2 fats and still one Slim. No problem at all with any of them.
Got a slim alive and kickin' hard. Biggest problem it got was maybe crash once or twice playing GT1, so basically no problems whatsoever.
I'd go for the slim just because of being smaller.
Doesn't the Slim have some heating issues after playing for a really long time, or keeping it on for a really long time?
I bought a fat one on release day and it still works flawlessly while one of my friends is on his 3rd slim now. But I guess it doesn't really matter, both should be fine.
I used to have a Fat one but the tray stoped working and have been using a Slim for a long time with no problems.
I had a slim for several years, never let me down.
I like how the latest slim one doesn't have a brick outside but it shouldn't make a difference really
I have had both for a long time. (A fat for 6 years and a slim for 6+ years)
I can't say I have noticed any difference when it comes to playing the game.
With the FAT PS2 you can mod your Memory card to read Burned Discs.
With the slim you cant :P

I would recommend a chipped Series 70k PS2 Slim. 90k has some serious ups and downs, example: it can't play CD based games (that includes Half-life, Metal Slug Anthology), and no Homebrews.

Or just get a fat to be guaranteed that everything works. :v:
Just go for the fat the slim overheats for long times of play and there is really no difference between them.
well fat is able to support HDD and maybe it makes lot of noise, while slim one is quiet, compact (you can place a 1L bottle on it)

Had a fat since they came out. Hasn't let me down since

It decays overtime, the tray is bad.
It is possible to do it with the slim PS2
Yes, but it limits to Serial 78000, anything above that has updated BIOS that can't read homebrews.

I've got my original model PS2 that's been played extensively by me and my brother and nothing's gone wrong like that
Earlier slims (the ones that have a strip of glossy plastic, that you can put FMCB on, SCPH-70001 and above) had overheating problems, the last version (the ones with around half the top of it being glossy, SCPH-90001 and above) solved those problems but also fixed the homebrew exploit, and apparently can't run PS2 CD games.
I bought a fat PS2 (SCPH-30001) with a network adapter about two months ago, that had a decent amount of use. It survived a 9000 kilometer trip in a cardboard box without a scratch, and I just diskswapped it, installed FMCB, and slapped a hard drive in the bay.
I can run games off the HDD so I don't have to worry about my laser or tray wearing down or breaking (even if it did the parts to fix it are still available), and with the network connection I can install stuff to the HDD directly from ISO backups, and even run media off drives in the network. And I have GS Mode Selector and component cables, so the video quality is sublime on my LCD where it'd look terrible with composite cables (damn you Kojima for not including a proper widescreen mode on the MGS games, though.) The info on how to do all of this is readily available on the internet, but with the scene being dead for like five years now everything is a mess of broken links and I'm open to answering questions/helping if you need any.
I'd say go fat if you can find one that looks like it's been taken care of, and you're into homebrew and tinkering with stuff. I don't really see why anyone would own a slim with fat ones still in the market (probably to buy one new and have a warranty, or something like that.)

Well, maybe it depends on the user, I had my 77k since 2006 and it still works.
Fat, that way if you drop the fucker it still works.
The fat one is much bigger. That is the one you should get. I've had one for a decade and it's never let me down.

Fats are a bit more fragile to shock though? At least if you have a disc spinning or an HDD
I've seen a slim drop a meter and a half, pop open, launch the disc across the room, and still work perfectly until the next load point. Crazy shit.
I'm not going to be pirating any games or burning any discs, preowned works for me.
Fat.
I don't know why, but the slims kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, there was nothing really WRONG with them, I just prefer the classic fat design.
If your only argument is personal preference, and you even acknowledge it, why are you even making an input
I dont know if any PS2 servers would even be up after all this time, but in the off chance you're hoping to play something online, OP, the fat PS2 requires an aftermarket network adapter.
