• Sweet Foods/Drinks Sweeter After Low-Sugar Diet?
    2 replies, posted
Alright, so I went on a fairly extreme diet about a month ago, abstaining from all soda, and basically anything that wasn't water plus sugary foods and snacks. On the rare occasion that I have sweeter things, such as presweetened tea, I've noticed they are noticeably more sweet than I remember. I figured this might be in my head, but it's actually kind of irritating. I seem to developing a dislike of sweet things because they are overbearingly sweet. A good example of this is on my mum's birthday when I had a slice of cake and couldn't eat much of it without feeling physically sick. Anybody know what might cause this or might've experienced it or am I just fucking crazy?
How much sugar were you eating before? A lot?
Well, it's just a theory, but maybe it's because sweet foods contain glucose, and if your diet is low in sugar your body might be producing more amylase (it turns sugars into glucose) in order to make up for the decreased glucose consumption. So if you eat something that has a lot of sugar, you might be turning it into glucose faster than you did before, and because it's the glucose that produces the sweet taste, sweet things might taste sweeter. Remember it's just a theory, and I'm not a scientist or anything like that.
