So I want to start applying for jobs as soon as I'm 14. Unfortunately, it seems pretty obvious to me that no one will hire. Plus, I can't work around any heavy equipment/food objects until I'm 16.
So how likely is it that I could get a job doing...anything?
Paper round, good luck getting anything more.
Well, where do you live?
I'll pay you 6 pounds an hour to come round to my house and clean up.
Hmm, my brother got his first job when he was 14. Worked at McDonalds.
Not likely at all. The best places to go would be fast food restaurants though. If someone is going to hire a 14 year old, that would be the place.
Though, as far as I know, no place can hire someone younger than 15. Unless I'm mistaken.
i'm propably getting paid for babysitting you
nah, i got my first job when i was 16, i installed radiators and stuff like that on construction sites
Paper route. Shit, if it was good enough income, I'd still be doing it.
hmm well, i couldn't really say. But what exactly are you looking to apply for? Fast food places come and go, it's a revolving door but it is an OK place to start. I myself work as a waver for Liberty Tax Service. The pay is good and the job is easy and fun.
You can easily mow some lawns or go to some factory. (At least I can) But that was years ago here, I'm 18 now.
Their are very few jobs open when your 14-15.
Mostly...
Safe Way
McDonalds
Paper Runs
Cleaning Up People's Houses
Mowing Lawns
Catching fishing bait for bait shops (Digging for worms :P)
I want an ACTUAL job, though. I had a paper route at 12, and though it did pay, it was significantly less than minimum wage.
And if I worked at McDonald's...what could I do? Cashier, I'm guessing?
You could work construction if you know what you're doing and can find someone willing to pay you under the table.
And to one of the above posters, it's 14 for an "Actual job" not 15.
In the UK you have to be 16 to get a job.
When I was 14, I made money by babysitting, mowing lawns, petsitting, and housesitting. If you know your neighbors well, try to find out what you could do for them in exchange for money. You probably will have better luck doing odd jobs than actually getting hired somewhere.
If you go ask by yourself and be polite you may get a proper job. Don't try filling any job applications without meeting face to face, cause employers pretty much ignore your application because you're young.
Well OP, depending on your state, you can apply for a worker's permit at 14 and one half years of age like here in VA. IF you get the permit, you'll be able to work many jobs but there will be hour restrictions. So where is it you live?
Actually terrible. If you even get a job at say McDonalds they'll treat you like the bottom feeder and give you the "clean-up" jobs, since they don't want you on the register or the stoves.

You can work like some certain hours a week doing certain things if you are under 16.
I am 17 and haven't got a job though, I don't need one
You can work in light work part time, but there are restrictions. You cannot work more than two hours on a school day or on a Sunday. You cannot work during school hours, neither can you work before 7am or after 7pm. During the school holidays you cannot work more than five hours a day or more than 25 hours per week.

This is true. You're better off mowing lawns or taking odd jobs around your neighborhood. They'll probably pay better and your customers will treat you better than any McDonald's manager.

I see.
Well if you worked at McDonalds you'd most likely be cleaning tables. They usually don't want younger kids working the kitchen or the register.
Ihop if you know people
Your best luck would be going to non chain companies, family owned places, and getting paid under the table. Most chains only hire at 16/18+, even if you have a worker's permit.
Paper route.
What i did from when i was 13 till i was 16.
Then i worked in some of my holidays & vacations at a factory, for a sweet salary compared to average payment a 16-17 year old "kid" gets.
Paid for all my computers, my car and my drivers license.

If my odd jobs suggestion fails, this should be your next move. My dad offered to pay me $50 per day for working on the road as an appraiser. The offer is still open though he couldn't afford to pay me because of financial issues. Anyway, find somewhere more stable than our business if you're going to try this.
Busboy at a restaurant this summer. Thats what I'm going to do.
You can work at Chick-Fil-A when you're 14, no joke.
At least at ours you can.

Safeway? No, you have to be 17. I work for Vons, it's my first job, and they're owned by Safeway.
