Hey, I hope this is the right place...
I have a ps3 that my friend gave to me which is broken.
He tried to do a software upgrade and failed....Now the ps3 doesnt work.
It starts, then 3 secs green light and then 3x beep and OFF.
No picture on screen no nothing.
Is there a solution to this?

Maybe this will help.
Drumdevil
The symptoms are the 1st one...(PS3 on - Green light - Yellow light - 3 Beeps - Flashing Red Light = YLOD.)
Any way to fix this YLOD?
Edit: Found out someone allready tried to fix the ylod, and did not sucseed....
There is also a possibility that the broken software on it is making the ylod come back all the time... (Can I somehow install the old software on it or something?)
YLOD is a hardware issue, so I don't think the software you installed is the reason why this happens.
Usually it's a problem in the motherboard.
Send it to get re-balled. Don't try any of these heat gun or oven fixes. They don't work and do more harm than good.

The "Oven fix" will destroy the board, but a heat gun (not a hair dryer) used properly can fix a cracked BGA joint most of the time if you rig the board properly.
Though I wouldn't recommend a heat gun fix attempt to someone that doesn't know what they're doing.
I've done the hairdryer fix and it did work, surprisingly.

Because solder melts at 600-700F, no hairdryer can get near that.
Friend of mine had an YLOD and fixed it by cleaning the heatsink out and putting on some new thermal pads and paste.
