Valve has taken a Left 4 Dead-style shotgun to rumours that it is working on a Linux compatible version of its Steam platform.
The studio is opening Steam up in terms of formats this year - promoting Steamworks on PS3 and transferring the service to Mac.
However, the firm has quashed any suggestion that it may be looking at another windows rival.
When asked if it was working on a Linux version of the digital game sales platform, Valve's Doug Lombardi told GI.biz:
"There's no Linux version that we're working on right now."
It doesn't get much more comprehensive than that, folks.
However, Lombardi was very excited about Steam on Mac - predicting that 2011 will see lots of games released simultaneously on PC and Apple's rival format.
He added: "People are looking at their titles for this holiday and saying 'a Mac version would screw with my schedule or I'd have to ship it late. Neither of those is super-desirable. But the titles that I have in Spring of 2011 or in holiday of 2011, let's have a discussion and let's see those numbers and start to figure it out.'
"So that's when folks can really start to see the advent of simultaneous releases on new Mac releases really start to kick in, now that the foundation has been laid this year if you will. You'll see some new releases coming in 2011 - including our own one, Portal 2."
I'm afraid that you're late, dear gentleman.
Oh? Where's the thread?
Linux deserves Steam more than Mac in my opinion.

That is true indeed.
Especially with WINE acting like a piece of shit most of the time.
I'm slowly starting to loose hope in Linux gaming. I really, really want Valve to start pushing that OS; because other developers will follow. The moment Steam moves linux, my Windows partition is GONE.
They say they're not working on Linux platform, but what about that source code that so many of us had mostly working?

Maybe it was just a proof-of-concept and they gave up on it.
I knew rubbish was the UK version of trash but I didn't know you could also use it as a verb.

If steam moves onto Windows, my Linux disk is going to be in my CD Tray and I'm reinstalling it before you can say 'Cum nuggets on wheat bread'.

This
I use GNU/Linux whether or not gaming is here. :P
Oh? Where's the thread?
Oh yeah, sorry, forgot to reply, well it was somewhere in the news node i think.
I would be happy with an OpenGL renderer on the windows versions of source games, think we will ever see this?

What about the -gl launch option?
Does that even work in source?, Checking...
Still using DirectX.

That a man!
For us lucky to have multiple machines and desktops at their use... I have ONE windows machine and it runs games and all the other crap that cant run in Linux (only games so far). 93% of all my devices are not windows...
I have been trying to quit the windows habit for 15+ years now; it is impossible to break the habit with the monopoly the fucks have.
Prefan's comments are my thought too... the moment a large distribution/publisher goes Linux, the flood gates will open. Valve was the only hope in sight at the moment and we lost it. The moment the dependency for windows on games is gone... so is my time with windows.
As for commercial deployments; Windows has been replaced in many spots across the world to reduce operational and license costs. Performance and availability cant be matched and I really enjoy removing Microsoft when ever I can and it makes sense.
I even installed Windows (last legit copy I bought: XP v:v:v) a few days ago, set up a 20 GB partition for it (as opposed to most people's 20 GB for linux everything else for windows, feels good man) because I gave up on waiting for Steam.
Maybe Valve will work on it after Portal 2 comes out!
They are so close, after making the Mac steam platform and source ports. I really hope that he wanted to stress the "right now", and that they will continue to work on it in future.
Please :ohdear:

Are you kidding me? Portal 2 would be the the best game to launch with Steam for Linux! :D

To address the many emails/inquiries from today, aside from the individualized emails I have provided on the matter, I will simply say Valve is still working on the Linux client and it is still coming. It may not be delivered on Valve's original time-line (end of Summer), but by year's end is still not out of question. I haven't made a news post of these recent matters though since there will continue to be doubters and those just trying to tarnish the Phoronix brand claiming its for ad views, etc, however, the Steam Linux client is still coming. Though beyond this statement I probably won't answer more until I have something to link to ValveSoftware.com or when there's something else to shut up those doubting this information, just take it as you will. This is just a similar situation to when I had broke the news on the new ATI "Orca" Linux driver back in 2007, SplashTop info, etc etc...
Besides anything that I say or from my sources, it's been independently confirmed by The Telegraph that it's coming, there's been the Steam Linux binaries shown, Steam continues to hire Linux engineers (they don't need that many for a server port, you've likely seen all the work done by Ryan "Icculus" Gordon for Linux server ports that he has individually done for major game titles), to this day you can continue to find Valve's Chris Green of recruiting saying they are really looking for Linux engineers (such as on LinkedIn), etc etc. [Not to mention that Valve was very quiet about the OS X client up until their closed beta was quite soon.]

I doubted Doug Lombardi's statement from the start.
There was simply too much evidence.
imo, valve games on linux is not needed. Almost everyone uses Windows or Mac nowadays. The ones that do use linux, often dual boot with windows. I think valve doesn't have to waste their time offering an alternative for people who are either too lazy (or poor) to dualboot with windows.

The thing is that mac -> linux = No work at al. Especially for low level software like the source engine. Also we already have a leaked linux version of steam.

I just don't want to use Windows.

Pretty much this. Well, of course there is work to be done to make Source on Linux possible, but it certainly takes much less work to port the Mac version to Linux than to port the Windows version to Linux.
While I don't use Linux personally, I do think that it's only right that Steam should produce a trifecta of their software, one for each OS. Simply because then Windows users can pay money for games, Mac users, and then Linux users.
Also, unrelated, it's "lin-ux" not "line-ux" right? I was discussing the fact that I had to boot to Puppy Linux to save some files on my hard drive the other day and he was content on pronouncing it "line-ux".

Valve has the power to change computer gaming for the better, but won't right now. I think they're finishing up the Mac port and interface, getting everything ready with OpenGL and then are going to port it to GNU/Linux quickly and hope for the best.

Yeah, I think it's so.

Wait, where's this leaked Linux version of Steam? When I tried Linux I couldn't find it..
