I tested my internet speed on speedtest.net, and it says that I have 2.84 MB/s download speed, yet I only get an avg of 350 kb/s. Why is this? Is there something I can get/do to speed it up? I am connected directly to a fiber optic cable (through my cable box, ethernet cord). I have AT&T U-Verse if that helps any, and my router says that its getting this:

any time, and i only have max 2 PC's and 1 laptop connected at one time, my PC being the only one on HomePNA, others wireless. i am supposed to get the same speed even if there are 30 comps using the internet at the same time
You're on a fiber connection and have a speed of 2.8 Mb/s.
You're not on fiber. You're on DSL, maybe Cable, if you are on fiber than you should be getting way more.

If you're on cable, that's shared bandwidth. The BW promised is what is supplied to the NID (Network Interface Device) that your house is connected to. So if everyone is on at the same time, doing heavy downloading or other activity, it will eat up bandwidth.
Otherwise, I have no idea, call your ISP.

i am...i watched as they ran a fiber optic cable down from the box at the end of our street to my house and watched them connect me to it, i am only running through 20ft of cable and an ethernet cord away from the cable. im not on T1 or anything, but yes im running off of a fiber optic cable. The cable is literally 1 slot away from where mine is, im not connected to a router per se, just my cable box. They obviously limit our BW, else i would get amazing speeds, but still, why am i getting 350 kb/s and not 2.84 mb/s?

That 350 is because of the server. If it's steam go into settings and make sure it's not limiting you, same with torrenting software. And you're not connected directly to a fiber network, everyone on your block has one of those cables and they merge into one bigger cable later on, causing a bottleneck, same thing with DSL, except that happens at the server. Also call your ISP, your house or neighbor hood could have some faulty/bad wiring. Also, how much are you paying for?
Notice how speedtest says it's Mbit. Your download speed is what it should be.

Mbit is 8 times less than Megabytes, so you're definitely wrong.
If it said MB, then you would be right, however, since 3*8 = 24

ah ok, thanks, i did the math and i should be getting 354 KB/s, which i am
im going to see about upgrading that, for another $20 a month i can get 2.5 MB/s
