If this isn't an April Fools, at the very least it's a choice rather than nerfing the whole game or anything like that.
Not sure if it's an April Fools, but if not it'd seem an odd mechanic because you'll be getting less souls and thus unable to upgrade your equipment and level up as much, so you'll feel tied to using them for every area

It is an April Fools joke, the whole change log does not mention an item added to the game at all.

I'd imagine if they did this they'd probably disable summoning for people who used it
