• Why does my computer run so hot?

Hey, AMD dual core 2.25ghz (Or summat liek that) 4GB ram Nvidia 9800GT 512mb 1 250gb hdd 1 1tb hdd 1dvd burner My video card runs really hot, almost all the time, no doubt I've already caused damage to it. I run two monitors, both 19" widescreens. right now I am running the basics, Skype, MSN, Steam, Saitek Controllers, Avast, and thats about it. As of this writing, my GPU is at 73C, temp1 is 45C, temp2 is 40C, temp3 is 33C and my hdds are at 37C. My core is at 15C which is good, right? :) I got 2 fans in my case. One for the CPU, and one in the back. I have 1 side on my case, as I cannot find the one that is missing. Lol. Any tips or programs I can use that help fan speeds and such? I'm using speedfan, but Imma not sure how to use it. Thanks
What case are you using?
What case are you using?
Just some random shitty one. I dunno the model or anything. its about 2.5' by 2' on the side, 9'' on the front side.

Also, the area surrounding your case should promote good air circulation. You don't want it put into a cubby hole or whatever.
yeah, its sitting basically out in the open. on the ground.
For one you should check the fan speed, then see if the video card is getting any airflow. I use the EVGA Precision tool to check and speed up my fan even though it's a BFG it's still compatible. http://www.evga.com/PRecision/

I use Rivatuner, but whatever works. Also, get some compressed air and blow all the dust out/off of your card. That will help you lose a few degrees.
I see no heat issue here. 73C for most video cards is normal and is not dangerous in any way. Now if while under load your card pushes 95C then it would be a good time to break out some keyboard duster
Are you sure theres no dust stuck in the ventilator?
73C is normal-ish on LOAD. if that's idle there's a problem.
Alot of cards are designed with load temps around 85C-90C. Some run hotter than others and for example the HD 4850 with the stock single slot cooler idles at 70C load at 88C.
they're not designed for it, they can take it but it's not going to last nearly as long as if it's at normal temps

http://www.evga.com/PRecision/
I just made this tool run my fan at 100% It's really loud right now, dunno if that wears out the fan really fast too. It's gone down from 69 to 55. Now it's down to 50. Speedfan seems to think that 50C is too high as it has a fire icon next to GPU. Maybe it needs to get its ass whooped? Should I bring the fan speed down a lot, or should I just buy a new case with good ventilation, because my case has an open side, not much air flow.
I got a CM Storm Scout. 4 fans in it. Does nothing.

You can only count on load temps. And Speedfan is just being stupid.
