Microstuttering while playing games on Macbook Pro Retina
13 replies, posted
I've installed Windows 7 through bootcamp on my Macbook Pro Retina, and I've been having microstuttering problems in some games. The two games that it's most noticeable in is Bad Company 2 and GTA IV. Does anyone know what may be the problem? I've messed around with the pre-rendered frames in the Nvidia control panel and resulted that Bad Company 2 seems a little better when its set to 0. Grand Theft Auto 4 on the other hand seems to microstutter no matter what options I choose.
I've already tried updating the drivers (there aren't any new ones yet) and I've tried a clean install of Windows twice. Here are my computers specs:
Intel Core i7-3615QM CPU @ 2.30GHz
Installed RAM: 8gb
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Operating System
Nvidia Geforce GT 650m
Any help would be appreciated.
Having battled microstutter for years - honestly if you're having it on a clean install you might as well give up
and/or try a different os (xp, embedded, etc.)

Would installing Vista and playing games off that make a difference? I thought Windows 7 was formated better for games (Does DX11 only work in W7?)
Keep in mind GTAIV is a console port, and a fairly shoddy one that is.
For one person is runs almost perfectly, while for another one it's a downright nightmare to even get is above just playable.
And that's even with pretty much the same hardware and drivers.
Also had some bad experiences with Battlefield Bad company 2 myself, it's extremely picky regarding gfx drivers.
So honestly, those games you're having problems with are known for being like spoiled children.

Windows Vista SP2 and above, so yeah.
Windows 7 is faster than Vista though, and I dunno about Windows 8.
For the love of god, don't use the shitty drives Apple provides.
Download yours manually from NVIDIA.

I tried removing the apple drivers and installing Nvidias, but my resolution became all messed up and I had to reinstall windows. Are there any step-by-step guides I can follow to ensure I get everything correct?
I'll try a shot in the dark. The system isn't allocating enough shared vram for Retina display resolutions, thus causing constant memory <-> hard-drive swapping? Did you try running on half-resolution? (so it would look like it's running on a normal display)

I have the systems resolution set to 1920x1200 (16:10) and the in-game resolution set the same (1920x1200).

Quick update, I redownloaded the new beta drivers (Verde R304 Driver) but they won't install. I just get a message saying it can't find compatible hardware, even though I'm using the correct version. Is there some way I can manually install the drivers myself, without having the auto-installer scan my computer for compatible hardware?
Well that's most likely your problem, a 650m isn't built to run games like BFBC2/GTA4 at such a large resolution.
I installed Windows 8 preview build and it actually appears to have solved the stuttering. Why? I don't know.

The 650m in the Retina Macbook Pros are nicely overclocked, I'm having no issues running BC2 with a steady framerate at 1920x1200 maxed out except SSAO is off. There were microstutters for some reason, but it seems like it just fixed itself due to the installation of Window 8.
