So even though I realize I may get some laughs from people, I'm still new at so much of this so please bear with me.
First off, I'll state that my idea is to build a decent server to run a website off of in my home. So what are some decent things to have and is what I have good enough already?
Currently, I have a Dell optiplex 370 (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ws370/en/ug/findinfo.htm#1054387) upgraded to 2gb ddr2 ram.
It has an Nvidia GeForce graphics card, simply cause it was a spare I had
some sort of networking card that was given to me, all I know is its a 100/1000 card.
A netgear wireless N PCI Adapter (currently used for the internet)
1 dell monitor, keyboard and mouse
My internet speed is quite sadly 5mpbs download, 756kbps upload
So first off, where online is the cheapest place to get some good, high quality, ethernet cable from? Is it better/worth it to get CAT6 or CAT5e cable?
Can my internet even handle a steady flow of traffic? Is there anything that should be upgraded, in regards to the server, not internet speed?
As I said before, I'm new to all of this, but what kind of firewall should I get? Could I get away with just using a software firewall or should I get a physical firewall also?
I don't expect to get a huge amount of traffic at all. at most maybe 50 hits/day with the visit lasting between 20-45 minutes.
Any help will greatly be appreciated. If more information is needed, feel free to ask.
Your internet speed would probably be enough, considering the users are only viewing a basic web page. However, home connections really are not a good idea for hosting, especially since your Internet use could affect the performance of your server, or vice-versa. The hardware should be good enough. Also, if you aren't even familiar with the basics of firewalls, I wouldn't recommend opening up your home network to the public.
You should really just get a cheap hosting account from lithiumhosting.com, it's only $10 a year.

I actually do have an account with them. My issue is that for the things I'm going to be running, I can't use shared hosting because I need to be able to use ram and the cpu and well, shared hosting doesn't like you using them.
I really wouldn't suggest running it off your home connection unless it will just be for friends. Have you considered renting a VPS? URPad is pretty cheap. (Actually, if you aren't in a hurry, you could PM me and I might be able to get you a really good deal)

If you could, that would be awesome.
