StreetPass stuff confused me, is this not like the other games where there was a set number of characters that were all unique?

I think the street pass is a separate team. You set up your team and then when you walk by someone who has their own 3DS and street pass team, they "fight" and the results are shown when you play next.

Yeah but it says you can recruit them and stuff
The only game I have for my 3DS is Zelda Orcarina of Time, I really need to buy more games. Had it since release as well

The characters you get in Spotpass are from previous fire emblem games. There are 12 different sets of 10 characters each you can get. FE4 (Seisen no Keifu) has two sets, one for each generation. 1 set for each game excluding the 2 remakes and 2 for FE4 gives you 11 sets based on FE games. The sets will have the main lord and 9 others from the game. The 12th set is comprised of villains from previous FE games.
All of this completely optional, of course, but it is nice that it is there. Some of these characters can be bought as DLC, but most of the non-lord characters can only be gotten this way.
Oh man I'm hyped.
