Can this HP 15-in-1 card reader be put in my new computer?

So I've had my new gaming computer up and running for a few months, but I really have missed being able to plug the SD card from my camera directly into my computer. My old prebuilt HP had this card reader in it that worked great:

Can this be plugged into my new motherboard just fine? I'm still not the greatest with the hardware side of computers, but from my perspective it should just plug and play.
My mobo is a ASRock z77 extreme3, do I just plug the reader into the COM1 port header? I don't want to plug it in a end up frying my brand new PC.
It will be a USB header if it is compatible, and it is unlikley that it will fit on a USB header if it is not a USB card reader.
However there is a very small change the pins will match but it is different, but I don't think there is a way of saying unless you plug something else with a USB header into the place where the card reader connected on your HP, and seeing if that works.
If you can't do that and don't want to risk it, you can buy a USB on from ebay or the like.
Just plugged it into a USB header, 4 pins wide. It works, but for some reason my windows color scheme changed from Aero to the lower cpu usage version, which I cant change back. I'm going to unplug the reader and see if it changes back.

I seem to be stuck in Windows 7 Basic, which is a tad annoying. Any ideas to get back to Aero?
