Why does Google Play need access to my media for apps?

I trying to download an app that will let me play Quake1or2/Doom/Wolfenstein on my phone but all want access to my media wtf?

It means it wants /sdcard/ access. Android apps do not get permission to access it by default and I assume it needs it to access the game files.
Android implemented that years ago. Apps used to have free reign over the SD card partition.

You should honestly freak out less about permissions if this is where it leads you. Android permissions can be vague, but in most cases they're benevolent. If you're really that geared for security/privacy, i recommend using something that can disable permissions after the install. xprivacy for the xposed framework does quite well if you do not mind a wide range of options, and a never ending flood of windows when you launch a new app (basically asking for permissions for each individual item).

Nougat does that by default apart from permissions being real fucking broad.
