ATI Radeon 6000 Series "Before the End of the Year"
If you're looking to AMD just for graphics, you might also have something to look forward from ATI. Meyer said at the conference call, "We will start introducing the second-generation of our DX 11 products before the end of the year."'
ATI's second generation DX 11 products, code named Southern Islands, will be fabricated on the 40nm process as well and be branded as the Radeon HD 6000 series.
Can't wait.
I've grown to really enjoy stepping back and just watching the last GPU generation and not jumping in and impulse buying because I've got money burning a hole in my pocket, I think I might wait this next one out too.
Can't wait to see the next round of cards though, I hope they are more monolithic, nothing like a black mass of awesome threatening to break the PCI-E slot off your motherboard, lol.
Even more? :science:
This is why I got the 5770 and didnt blow all my money on the high end 5series as they have a habit of bringing out new ones quite soon after, and I would be annoyed that I could have just waited to get "the best". But my 5770 performs well enough for me in eyefinity mode so I doubt I will be getting any new gpu's for a while
So soon? I forgot how fast this market moves...
With Crossfired 5770's, I'm not upgrading until new games start dropping below 10 FPS, and by then the 8000's may well be out.
6000 series? so soon? well at least we know ATI is doing something, not like nvidia, sitting round the corner and god knows only when the GTX 495 will be announced or even out, even though they had good drivers,3d shit, physx or whatever it is.

Lets say things go your way, ATi releases, Nvidia does not. No competition means prices will go out the roof. Even if you are a die hard ATi fanboy you have to recognize the importance of a competitor.
Personally I don't think the 6000 series will be as good as the 5000 series in value and relative performance.
I predict that the 5000 series will be like Windows XP for ATI. So good that no one is willing to upgrade except the diehard enthusiasts.

Because Windows Vista is for diehard enthusiasts.
I read that they were planning on making the 6 series at the new 20nm (?) process but it wont be ready until the beginning of next year so the 6 series is just going to be a filler while they wait for the new manufacturing process in the new year for the 7 series.

It's been almost a year, it's not really that soon
It's been almost a year, it's not really that soon
first one came out in september. :colbert:
I heard rumors that said in the middle of 2011 a long time ago, before I decided to get a 5850. I only got the 5850 because I knew my older card wouldn't hold till the middle of 2011. I don't regret getting that card anyway though.
I'll look forward to see how much improvement they have made with these!
Wait, should I wait for a 6000 series before I get my new computer with a 5850?
Or are these things going to be extremely overpriced..?

Wait, or get a cheaper card to see you through now, and get a 5850/70/5970 when the prices go down after the release of the 6series.

gee it's not like they just released the GTX 460, an incredibly good price/performance card

Same. I have the 5770, and I love it.
I'm still using a HD4670 :saddowns:
They shouldn't focus on releasing new cards ,they should release new drivers that fix the fucking black/colored screens that the community and I are STILL getting.
well I guess its time to start looking on ebay for the 5xxx's being sold by the 6xxx's early adopters.
I don't think I'am going to upgrade my Cross Fire setup until I see a really really good eyecatching game.
It's not going to improve performance lots, it'll be a minor step-up from the 5000 series but not worth upgrading to.
When they start producing cards on the new 28nm / 20nm architecture we'll start seeing improvement.
All of this news about ATIs second generation cards are just wild speculation, it hasn't even been confirmed by AMD yet. The only thing that has been confirmed is that there will be a new generation released before the end of this year. The branding of these new cards are in the ballpark, no one knows what it will be called. Southern Islands is not an entirely unique chip versus Cypress, it's more of a tweaked refresh in preparation for Northern Islands, who knows how well it will perform. Cypress has lots of room for improvement on the node, so it's likely something good will come out of this, despite still on 40nm. However, I don't think it deserves a major version change from 5xxx to 6xxx for a minor node change, I just can't see it happening, unless there are good performance improvements. It's a little risky if they do that, people might react to it differently if it is called 6xxx versus 5890/5950 whatever you wanna call it. As for Northern Islands, that will be on the 28nm process as 32nm was canceled at TSMC and Global Foundries so it set them back a bit, but it will have major changes done to it, but there is hardly any information about it, all we can do is predict.
So yeah, don't really pay attention to these articles unless it has been confirmed by AMD, I just hate it when they assume shit like this

Not entirely true, 40nm still has lots of room for tweaking and improvements on the node, they don't need a die shrink to improve anything, it just makes it more efficient and allows them to increase the die space to add more features without running into heat and power problems.
Looking forward to the benchmarks. I'm on a HD5850 but I haven't got much other stuff to spend my money on. All depends on its Crysis 2 performance.
Cool, I've been meaning to get a new video card and switch to ATI.

Agreed, the 5770 is a stron performer all round.
Yay, I have a 5770, that's 230 away! :downs:
Still, they'd best stick a heatsink on it that's made of the ever-frozen tears of jesus christ to sell some initial units. Seeing as most people lose a big chunk of E-peen when they look under the flashy bits of plastic that squat on top of their investments.

HD4350, here. :smug:
I have an HD5770 as well should i maybe buy another HD5770 and do crossfire later?
how long will the HD5770 last until it is underpowered?
fyi, they said it wasn't going to be a major difference, it's all going to be rebranded 5xxx cards probably with a die shrink or something
[editline]11:57PM[/editline]
and I saw some benchmarks last night where they tested Crysis, 6xxx series came out like 5% better than the 5xxx cards
