Can someone suggest the best OS to use on an old PC so it can be used as a server for Mumble and possibly other things, I haven't really decided yet. Anyway, the specs are: 2.4GHz pentium 4 640MB ram 160gb IDE HDD I don't care whether it's command line only or whatever, just suggest something that has low resource usage and is pretty stable
Ubuntu and Debian are both pretty low resource with a default installation and if you don't mind you can strip it down even further.
Thanks guys, downloading Arch right now
Mac OS X Server Edition goddamnit and suddenly, people are no longer getting the joke
Mac OS X Server Edition goddamnit
It isn't a mac, and as far as I know, OS X can only work on macs properly
Well you could use a hacked form, but the last thing you want with your server is it being unstable.
CentOS 5.5
Windows server 2008.
CentOS 5.5
Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008
You're joking right?
You're joking right?
"Aha! Windows! i'm gonna bash it cuz it's made by M$ even though i've never used it" [editline]2nd November 2010[/editline] Windows server 2008 R2 is the best thing that he can run on his 'server'.
"Aha! Windows! i'm gonna bash it cuz it's made by M$ even though i've never used it"
Have you used windows server? For one it's not free, And the fact he has a low resource system, And you know. did use windows server to fuck with. Wiped my 1TB HDD even though it was supposed to run off a separate partition. Unless you are talking about running shitty servers on Server 2008 for the past five years, that would be an impressive feat of time travel.
Are you using server 2003? This is about Server 2008... [editline]2nd November 2010[/editline]
I've used both. Currently using 2008 R2 though. [editline]2nd November 2010[/editline] Anyways, i'm off to bed. It's like 2:30am here.

So then you have not been running two shitty home servers on 2008 for the past five years. because that's impossible. [editline]2nd November 2010[/editline] God dammit wingless stop ninjaing me!

I said i've been running windows based home servers for 5 years. I believe that was too hard for you to comprehend. So, let me reword it. I used 2003 for a couple of years and then upgraded to 2008 last year. i use windows 2003 r2 64bit.

Being gui based isn't really a con anymore unless you're planning on running a server on your pc that you put together in 1996.

He is going to need 8gb of ram if he wants to manage like 4000kazillion users a day.

CentOS has done well for me as has Fedora Server. At the command line level I don't notice much of a difference other than CentOS uses less ram.
