So i've got this 580 that i've/am currently in the process of buying. I want to get the rest of my computer up to its level. As it is, it's no slouch, but i'd love me some Ivy Bridge.

I'd prefer going with i5 over i7. What would you advice?
Budget? Within reason.
Within reason is subjective.

An i5 3570k and an MSI, ASUS or ASRock z77 would be advised. and some DDR3 obviously, some corsair, g.skill, Kingston, patriot, basically anything with a well known name.
You could get away with your Q9550 waiting until Haswell or until Christmas sales roll around.
You only need an i7 if you're doing things like running heavily threaded servers or doing lots of content creation in things like Maya, 3ds max or Photoshop. You should get an i5 if you're only going to use the machine for gaming related tasks.
Do you live near a Microcenter? You can easily save $50-$100 on i5 3570k + mobo combo if you are.
why not go for a 670, which is cheaper and a newer card

He needs new cpu/mobo/memory more than a new card. Not to mention that upgrading to a GTX 670 would be an expensive investment for a small upgrade.

Why in all hell would i go from 580 to 670? That's stupid... I've aldready got the card in my possession and am buying it rather cheap already. No reason to go for a marginal bumb in performance for 4 times the money, really.
Speccy mentions your processor is at 2.8GHz, why aren't overclocking that motherfucker? you can get it to 4GHz easily and it will set up you for a long time with the 580, i think spending 400€ on a new platform to gain 10 to 30 fps at this time with haswell around the corner is stupid, and you'll regret it
no really, wait this one out mate you got a solid build
I already squeezed it to 3.4 which is all that shitty MB will let me. Speccy never shows overclocks.
But thanks for that sound advice. As it is, i jumped in and ordered me a 3570k a z77 Extreme 4 and Corsair XMS3 ram. It was cheap as all fuck at 300 total... so i'm good.
oh
right then, have fun mate :D
Just thought i'd let yall know. I went on to get another 580 and a new Corsair 850 power supply. I've now got a whole new computer by only spending 500$. I'm pretty sure that's below half the usual price of such a computer.

I realize the thread is already done with and this is 3 weeks old, but I wouldn't call 6 months from now "around the corner." I just had to point that out. And to Bomimo, grats on the new rig man!

Sold it off. It served me well, but this guy had his own fail on him. AFAIK, there are two types of Q9550. His was the fragile one and mine was the overclockable one. I softened my buy with 100$ (i know that may seem steep, but with taxes on eletronics in Scandinavie, it was like 1000$ new) and he was happy.
Still looking to sell off the p5ql Pro and the DDR2 RAM.
1000 wat???
