tl;dr: our DRM did jack-shit so we're trying to save face
-oops misread the article-
Make game entirely online, can't pirate because the game has to be online. IIRC, Trackmania is unpiratable.
Make game entirely online, can't pirate because the game has to be online.
Yeah, that ended up great for SimCity
Make game entirely online, can't pirate because the game has to be online.
Don't know if you're serious or not, but singleplayer always-online games are the worst, especially the first release month when no servers can handle tens of thousands players simultaneously trying to connect.
Yep.
How's this related to DRM?
Yep.
Although in no way related to the topic at hand, that chart is stupid. There's no version that comes close to having everything, unless you have a Playstation.
How's this related to DRM?
Sorry, misread the contents of the article, thought the
I don't want us in a position where we're punishing a paying player for what a pirate can get around.
was a general statement, made after the DRM remark. My bad
How's this related to DRM?
I think the point that he's trying to make is that Ubisoft IS punishing paying customers by limiting the content that they get access to (unless they pay even more) and shouldn't really be seen as heroes for the statement they're making, rather just trying to cover their asses.
Yeah Ubi, you are a few years late with that.
tbh uplay is one of the least offensive systems I've seen in a while also those meta rewards for games are neat!
Yeah, that ended up great for SimCity
On the other hand, even with it's rough start Diablo 3 is doing well and is still unpirateable because of always online.
Gee whiz it took them long enough to figure it out. Guess it takes realising that lying to the hardcore PC market is FUCKING STUPID for you to also realise that most DRM only really ends up hurting the legitimate consumers in the long run.
On the other hand, even with it's rough start Diablo 3 is doing well and is still unpirateable because of always online.
Google Diablo 3 private server
tbh uplay is one of the least offensive systems I've seen in a while also those meta rewards for games are neat!
It may not be offensive, but it's crap. Bought Far Cry 3 on steam sale a couple of days ago, and I had to spend like an hour trying to fix Uplay as it kept crashing on start, not allowing me to play the game (problem was apparently that steam installed an older version that for some reason wouldn't work, so I had to uninstall and grab the latest one at their website). After googling I saw that people have been having problems with uplay for years, and the reasons/fixes have been very varying. If you're going to design a DRM, at least don't make it shit so paying customers have a harder time getting the game to run than those who pirate it.
Just bring back demos, or do what EA is currently doing.
Yeah, that ended up great for SimCity
did great for titanfall too and every single MMO ever made
did great for titanfall too and every single MMO ever made
I can think of a number of MMOs that bombed and went F2P quickly. Although that wasn't necessarily due to 'always online,' it was more due to either being terrible or being handled terribly.

Uplay wiped my blood dragon saves several times
tbh uplay is one of the least offensive systems I've seen in a while also those meta rewards for games are neat!
I beg to differ. I REALLY beg to differ. I was once able to play Assassins creed revelations on my uplay account. Until one day i logged it, uplay asked me to submit the License key for the game, I thought it was weird, but complied. Then it said that the license i submitted was already in use. This was from a game I BOUGHT ON STEAM. Thats what I get for buying shit ubisoft products. It's safe to say that ubisoft will never have my business again.

id rate this winner but you're kidding yourself if you think even Ubi is going to follow through on this
Make game entirely online, can't pirate because the game has to be online. IIRC, Trackmania is unpiratable.
They did that with Assassins Creed. Remember how much of a disaster that was?
that's a problem that occurs on any sort of registration system period that's solved by contacting support and explaining the situation and providing proof of purchase (ergo the verification email you get from steam)
Then you realize pirates don't have this problem, only paying customers.
Make game entirely online, can't pirate because the game has to be online. IIRC, Trackmania is unpiratable.
I'm not familiar with Trackmania, but do you mean entirely online like Team Fortress 2, or Sim City?
tbh uplay is one of the least offensive systems I've seen in a while also those meta rewards for games are neat!
Uplay is a billion times better than GFWL but it's still kinda pointless feeling I mean like steam sucks when you don't use it but HAVE TO install it... but steam is easily, bar none, on a huge level, way better than uplay

Origin is pretty damn nice, and Uplay has some of the most beautiful download speeds I've seen from a Digital Distribution client. Steam's got history and a lot of backing tho, that's what makes it so good.
