• I want to clone a hard drive.

Ok so, right now, I have 2 Harddrives HDD OLD: 250gb with 2 partitions, one is the System (C:), NTFS, and one is FAT32, which contains the installation for XP (D:), as my computer had XP preloaded and did not come with discs. HDD NEW: 1tb with nothing on it except the "System Volume Information" folder, and recycle folder, formatted as NTFS (H:\) I want to put ALL of my OLD HD, onto my NEW HD, and run my system off my NEW HD, PLUS the extra space. This way I have a backup of my system and now I can use more space and install more programs on my system. I have Arconis True Image, and when I go through the cloning thing, at the end, what it gives me on my new harddrive is: NEW HDD: C:\(238gigs)** D:\(12gigs)** and then the rest is unallocated space (700 gigs)**. I want NEW HDD C:\(900 gigs)** D:\(12gigs)** If after I do the partition, can I EXTEND the C:\ partition the way I want? So the main idea is:I want to put ALL of my OLD HD, onto my NEW HD, and run my system off my NEW HD, PLUS the extra space. **All these numbers are rough estimates off the top of my head, I hope you get the point. Please ask if you don't understand, I just don't know what do.
Download PartedMagic, it's a Linux LiveCD that is tailored for harddrives. You can edit partitions, clone entire harddrives, all sorts of fun stuff. It even has support for Mac formatted harddrives.
I clone my hard drives using a redundant way using a hex editor. WinHex can practically clone any format of hard drive bit by bit. After cloning the drive, I would use a partition manager and extend the cloned volume to the size of the new hard drive. Of course, it's always better to use a proper partition manager that is capable of cloning.
You could just use Norton Ghost. Does a great job ghosting/cloning drives. I believe it isn't freeware though
You could just use Norton Ghost. Does a great job ghosting/cloning drives. I believe it isn't freeware though
PartedMagic is free, and has alot more options than "Norton".
Download PartedMagic, it's a Linux LiveCD that is tailored for harddrives.
will it work on windows?
You boot the CD, and it boots into a Linux desktop. There is no need for windows when using this CD. When the CD has booted into Linux, use the tools to clone the harddrive to the new one, then take the disc out and reboot the pc.
will it work on windows?
Unless I'm mistaken, it's similar to an iso image. You should be able to run it independent of operating systems. However, I'm probably wrong as I know next to nothing about this sort of thing.
It's easy: download the iso file of partedmagic. burn the iso to a CD. reboot the pc to that CD.
It's easy: download the iso file of partedmagic. burn the iso to a CD. reboot the pc to that CD.
It's not working, I just burned the .iso to the disc... will that work? It worked with a different partition thingy...
Did you just burn the ISO to the disk, or did you burn the disk with the ISO?
Don't burn the .ISO file itself to the disk, use something like ImgBurn to burn the image. I'd also recommend Clonezilla over PartedMagic but that's just me.
Close this thread, i've succesfully cloned my harddrive using Acronis Migrate Easy, and then Partition Magic...
