I put this together and I think it's pretty decent and balanced, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything.
He wanted at least 4GB of ram, a quad core CPU, and a 1TB hard drive.

This is generally going to be a gaming computer, he wants something that will last a few years but he did mention Starcraft 2 and Source games. Oh, and Battlefield 3, hopefully.
Micro-ATX board because he won't really be doing anything but turning on the computer and using it, so all the ATX bells and whistles aren't needed.
Deciding on case at the moment.
Stability is an absolute must here, so recommending components of higher-quality would be appreciated.
I'll make you a build in 10 minutes

this is what I have so far:

I realize mine is $40 more than yours, but I believe that my build is far more upgradable and in the long run, would be better.

Also if he can go for $800 you can probably fit a 6950 in there
OP, I like your build. I hope you enjoy your free just cause 2 coupon.
You could swap the hard drive with a 1TB Spinpoint F3 if it is in budget.

They were out of stock, the parts are probably going to be ordered pretty soon too.
Also, do you mind if I swap out the MSI brand 460 for an EVGA? I feel like it has a pretty good warranty system and it's pretty easy to replace it if there's any issues with it.
As far as the power supply, I'm not sure if 750W will be used, even in the future. Unless something comes out that uses that much power or he uses 2 cards which I doubt he'll ever do, I'm not sure if that amount of power is necessary.
The case is up to my friend so I'll tell him about any differences and ask him about it.

There's a 750 watt there so you can SLi GTX 460s. Really good when you pair a couple up, and cheaper than the higher end GPUs.

Aaw the Silverstone you posted Jaehead is deactivated. OP get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371026
You may want to consider the HD6850 instead, as it supports MLAA, which I find is a very useful function, as it gives you (cheap) anti-aliasing for around a 3% FPS impact, compared to the huge performance hits of MSAA.
Updated the build.
I don't like the case, get a motherboard with 2 PCI-E slots, and get a 955
I don't like the case, get a motherboard with 2 PCI-E slots, and get a 955
Why the 955?
it's ~$25 cheaper, and you can easily overclock it to 3.6 on the stock cooler anyway

I'd swap the 460 for the 6850 in the OP, he can't SLi on that mobo but he will be able to crossfire
[editline]23rd December 2010[/editline]
also the PSU is out of stock, again the one in the OP looks good
and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&Tpk=spinpoint%20F3%201tb spinpoint F3 every time
other than that good build
yes, go for the spinpoint, they just came back in stock.
I thought you can patch the motherboard to accept SLI, but the 6850 is a good deal too.
I don't like the whole unofficial SLi thing, it's like the early core unlocking where it might work in which case you've saved some cash or it might fuck up/just plain not work
when you're spending X hundred/thousand [currency] on a build you don't want to put anything up to luck, I'd rather spend some extra to guarantee the performance/stability
in this case OP isn't even spending extra, all he's losing is the rebate and whatever smallimporvements to overclocking the hawk gives
My friend said he's not going to overclock or sli/crossfire anything so I'm going to keep the current CPU; it'll also be a single-GPU build.
He is going to decide on a case, though. I also updated the build with the Spinpoint but it's not in the OP, I'm not in the mood to update the image.

Bastard! they just went out of stock in Canada.
Okay, the build in the OP is final, but the Hard Drive is a Samsung Spinpoint as suggested. Thanks, guys!
I told you man
get the 955 and save some money

965 has no noticeable performance increase over the 955 even at stock, you'd see it in benchmarks but nowhere else
leave crossfire as a future upgrade option, it'll be much cheaper than buying a new card with a similar performance increase, with current cards nearing 100% increase in performance multiple cards is a very good upgrade option
get jaehead's build but the the 6850, 750W earthwatts and spinpoint F3, it's the best option as far as I can see
