So just recently I helped my RA order parts for a new desktop. We just got the parts installed today, and everything was running smoothly for about 10 or 20 minutes. Then the computer randomly shut itself completely off. For around 20 seconds afterward the power button didn't work. Another 5 or so minutes later and it stopped powering on altogether. The one time it turned on afterwards, it would power on for 4 seconds and shut off again, then repeat Despite my meager troubleshooting skills, I managed to verify the PSU's functionality in my own computer, so I think it's the mobo. However, I'm still not 100% certain it isn't somehow something else causing the problem. Any thoughts?
Did you use motherboard standoffs? */I ask this question here way to often
I would be too ashamed to come here for help had I not used standoffs. Apparently he put it together again and it ran for maybe an hour before shutting off again.
Sounds like it's shorted out wierdly like mine was. Did you spill thermal paste on it?
No, I used the stock Intel HSF (I know it's not as good as an aftermarket cooler) with the pre-applied thermal paste. Since this is about the mobo, I might as well ask why this one only requires 6 standoffs as opposed to 9. It's narrower than my own motherboard. I have another thing to mention. When it randomly shuts off the system stops responding to the power button. I can mash it as much as I want, but it doesn't turn back on for a while.
Fixed it! Turns out the problem was the APS power-save setting. Turned it off and everything runs fine now.
