• This is what happens if you forget to plug your CPU fan in

I was cleaning my computer earlier with a can of dust-off. I unplugged the cpu fan just in case it shorted the motherboard or something. Yep, so I put the side of the case on and turned the computer on. Nice and clean, low temperatures! That's a relief. Well, nearly four hours later (5 minutes ago) I just noticed I forgot to plug the CPU fan back in. Oh shit. My heart sank. I felt my stomach coming out of my arse. I quickly whipped HWmonitor on to see what I had done. 88 degrees celsius. Oops. I took the side of my case off in record timing as I was gulping my own tears through the pores on my nose. (not really). With the computer still on (bite me) I plugged the CPU fan in hoping that I could save my CPU. This screenshot was taken about thirty seconds after I put the fan back on. It clearly displays what the temperature was before and at the present time. So kids, did you fuck up too? Maybe, but the truth is, even with stock cooling which isn't switched on you're not going to fry your CPU providing you did a reasonable job at the thermal paste. Even with an hours' ArmAII my CPU still survived.
Your CPU should have throttled itself back to keep the heat within safe limits. Did you not notice ArmAII run slower than usual. Also your motherboard should have alerted you to the fact your CPU fan was not plugged in.
Agreed with Hexxeh. Just out of curiosity, what CPU do you have?

My motherboard doesn't have the beep thing plugged in because I couldn't find the right pins to put it on.
Haha, at least it would've turned off if it got too hot, if you hadn't disabled that feature.
Good luck diagnosing POST issues. You won't even know it is a post issue in the first place. Plug that shit in boi.
I think I lost it about 2 years ago.
I've had my computer on sleep before and when it's turned back on the fans haven't started up, except it's water cooled so you just watch everything get warmer as the system just pushes the hot water around.
It the little beeper even necessary? I purposely leave mine out.
It the little beeper even necessary? I purposely leave mine out.
Yeah it's not necessary unless you want to diagnose why your motherboard is suddenly failing. Good thing my mobo has a built-in speaker and little 2-digit alpha-numeric analog display thingy so I can watch it as it runs POST diagnostics.
A similar thing happened to me instead it was the SLI bridge not connected after I cleaned my PC. I noticed this after I completed World at War in a single sitting on my first play. I was wondering why there were more hitches than usual near the end of the game. But it's rather strange that your motherboard didn't report your CPU fan not being plugged in.

My heatsink came loose about a month ago and I just fixed it last week. Load temps hit 100c.
When I got my 9800GTX+, a piece of cardboard was in the fan. It made this terrifying noise, that I ignored, as it went away (probably because it jammed the fan). Later I checked my temps from playing ArmA2 and the card was at 150C. Quickly I rushed to tell someone on steam friends, then I unplugged my PC and took out the card. (which I burned myself on once or twice trying to get it out). Still works fine.
790i? LGA1336 EVGA board?
Close. 780i, LGA 775 by EVGA. mind you, I bought this when it was like 200 dollars.
I have once had my CPU reach 95 degrees celsius on an intel burntest Nonetheless it's a laptop but still

This happened to me once. My system wouldn't boot because it recognized the CPU fan was not plugged in. I guess not all systems do this?
Whenever I forget to put my GPU fan at 100% (it defaults to 35%) my GPU gets to 90 C
My system automatically shuts down after 10 seconds without the heat-sink plugged in -- thank goodness.
I felt my stomach coming out of my arse.
that happens to me too HNNNNGGGH see?
I've never forgotten to plug in the CPU fan, but I have forgotten the PCI-E power cable once before. Scared the hell out of me when I turned my computer on and it started screaming at me.
it started screaming at me.
I remember once I put PC100 ram in a board that wouldn't take anything other than PC133. My computer started screaming at me, and I haven't shit my pants since.
My heatsink came loose about a month ago and I just fixed it last week. Load temps went up to about 85 degrees with the fan on 100% until I realized what had happened.
I once had a broken CPU or something like that. The fan was normal and the... metal thingy (don't know what it's called in English) was clean, yet from starting to entering setup the temperature went up to 85°C and 5 seconds later the PC turned off.

Thank god for heat sinks
