might want to avoid this for now
How come?
It's fantastic! Just some performance issues I drop to 20fps on my GTX670 3570k all overclocked
performance is pretty shoddy and the settings menu has some real issues (AF is a setting but its greyed out and there is nothing for it in the game config files) people saying they are getting major cpu bottlenecks when they shouldn't be, that the game is only utilizing one core instead of all of them.
It'd be nice to have a demo of some sorts.
There's a lot of issues in this game. It's really sad. Huge X fan here, I can get over a lot of shit like the 1 ship thing and all that. The issues go rather deep though. Controls are shotty and really do feel like they were made for a controller first (which is sad because the controller doesn't control very well either with the UI). There's horrible performance issues especially around stations, Yisha is annoying as hell, and I just can't bring myself to play it anymore in it's current state.

They priced this in the UK as if it was a $59.99 title?
Well in content it IS a 59.99 triple A game, up there with bf4 and the likes. They just can't test their games, it's always been like this.. Give it a month or two and you'll probably have an amazing title
Pretty much every X game has been this god awful at launch. I'm not excusing ES for that, but you can't argue their products don't get significantly better post-release.

And by that I mean mostly quad since the only dual cores I see anymore are absolute barebones or workstation laptops. you can only pilot one ship in the game, but you can hire other ships to do shit for you, and buy capital ships which you can enter and command the captain to do shit for you.
It's probably not detecting the cores or using them as intended, it's unreasonable to assume that they didn't code multi core support in at all.
From their sticky on the steam forums:
As I have explained above our engine is oftentimes CPU bound because of the massive AI simulation going on in the background. This is happening on multiple threads, but there are always two threads which mostly limit the framerate. This means the game will greatly benefit from a quadcore machine where two cores can crunch on our two main threads, one core can do the graphic driver code and the fourth one is free for the lower priority threads of our game such as pathing calculations, loading and sound. More cores will unfortunately not help much at this point in time.
So it seems it helps up to four cores (in theory). Beyond that it doesn't really do much.
Any other major gameplay flaws like the 1 ship thing?
Ship commands are currently fucked, you basically only have three commands to give your ships - "follow me", "sit here", and "jump to there (capital ships only)". Fleet management is a nightmare. [editline]16th November 2013[/editline] Aside from that, there isn't really anything wrong with the gameplay barring some buggy AI. It's just very different from the previous X games, however. More like DarkStar One or Freelancer than X3.
They really need to make it so you have an exterior view of your ship. it's so fucking annoying to not be able to see where shots are coming from if they aren't directly in front of you. And the map system is just shit.
I was really looking forward to this, but it's such a departure from classic X that I simply don't have any desire to play it now.
Well... I figured I would give this game a try. I was almost having fun the entire time. I really wanted to love this game... but its bad. The UI is ... unforgivable and buggy. The layout of everything ... is piss-poor. I couldn't even get past the energy trading mission (in the tutorial) because of a glitch. Granted you can edit your save file xml to work around this, but ffs... its the tutorial... of all things in a game to have bugs... it should certainly not be any part of the tutorial. I think I will go back and play some X3 to feel a real X game...
