Sounds like either a corrupted windows installation or a failing harddrive. Can you start in safe mode? If you can run a chkdsk (it may tell you to restart to run it). If you have a windows xp install disk (the disk you use to install windows xp), boot with the disk in, and when it opens up the windows xp setup, Press R, and follow on screen directions to get to the recovery console. (you can check this page out for more detailed instructions to get the recovery console open: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/rconsole.htm) Once you're in the recovery console and logged in as Administrator (when it asks for credentials, type Administrator as the username, and <blank> as the password (blank as in no password). Once you get a command prompt, try entering "chkdsk c: /F /R" (without quotes), then "recover C:" without quotes, and press enter. After that completes, enter "fixmbr" without quotes. Now reboot your pc and see if that fixes it. Good luck!

Try repairing the MBR, use the Windows XP CD and start recovery console. The commands are: Fixboot Fixmbr
