Booting up to install - black screens[Ubuntu 11.10/10.04]

So I've decided I wanted to reinstall Ubuntu without raping my windows partition by putting it in it's own place. But for some annoying reason every time I boot into setup, it black screens while my HDD LED is lit up. The same thing happened when I tried to use WUBI installer.
The windows partition is Windows XP Professional SP2 x64. The graphics card is some AMD model, not exactly sure what model to be exact.
Linux Mint starts and works but eventually crashes for some odd reason and I'm unable to figure out why. Drivers maybe?
When I run these on their own with no windows beside it, it runs perfectly normal. No crashes, no black screens.
I just can't figure out how to resolve this without completely killing everything I have on the windows partition. It only started to do this when I reverted back to XP 2 weeks ago.
Do you see the grub boot menu when you turn on your computer? And do you get any kind of error messages?

Yeah I saw it, after that it just shuts off the monitor and doesn't do anything.
is it only when you try to boot Linux or also when you boot Windows?

Only linux, windows isn't bothered by it.
okay. try edit the kernel line when you see grub, and add "nomodeset" to the end of it. Don't know if that helps, but try

For some odd reason it decides to run normally now, although I didn't change anything. But thanks for the help anyways.
