My First Build V. "How many times am I going to have to remake this thread?"
31 replies, posted
Hello once again, Facepunch PC Building elite. In the 2 or so years I've been active on Facepunch, I've made probably 4 threads regarding my "first" build. Naturally, none of these builds have ever come to fruition. Today, that changes. After securing a final OK, I do believe I will finally be able to get my first new PC in over 5 years.
So, after much research, I've come up with the following for a final build. Keep in mind, I need everything but speakers and a mouse, so I'd appreciate if you told me what I missed.

Am I missing anything? Thanks for any help!
Edit: I'd also like to SLI the 570 later, would this build still be viable for that?
Antec 900 is great case.
I'd hold off on the HDD until prices go back to normal, use the one you have on your current PC.
Hyper 212 comes with Thermal paste.
And that Hyper 212 is going to block DIMM slot 1 on that MB.
I've heard nothing but good things about the 900, and 2 of my friends have them.
My current PC is a school provided laptop. I've been gaming for 8 or so years and I've never had my own PC. Essentially, I don't even have a hard drive to call my own.
I figured that the Hyper came with paste, but I wasn't sure so I added it just to be sure.
And by DIMM slot 1, you mean one of the RAM slots right? Is there any way I can get around that or should I just put a different cooler on it?
It's not going to block anything, maybe with the tall heatspreaders - but that's the RAM's problem and not the HSF.
Don't waste your money on that overpriced RAM, you could almost get 16GB for the same price. Just get some moderately priced 1600 mhz RAM, and make it blue or grey / black so it matches, like this Geil.

also make sure you're doing combo deals.
[editline]4th November 2011[/editline]
also consider a mechanical keyboard
[editline]4th November 2011[/editline]
oh and the 212 comes with thermal paste, no need to buy the AS, although it's probably a little better and it's nice to have extra laying around.
Armotekma suggested 1600 G.Skill Ripjaws, so I went with that.
He also suggested I change to a mobo with x8 lane speed and a HAF 922
ripjaws still have a useless heatsink attached that may be incompatible with some HSF.
Oh, well if it'll cause issues, I'll change it to the Geil then. Thanks!
Will there be issues with SLI 570s later? I don't know what he meant by lane speed, but it seems like if I kept my previous mobo, I wouldn't be getting the same performance.
I'll edit the OP with a more final list of parts later.
[editline]4th November 2011[/editline]
Oh, and about mechanical keyboards. I'm interested in one, but don't know where to start. Could you suggest a nice Cherry MX Blue keyboard? Those seem to be the most suited for my needs (medium actuation, not too easy to press, not too difficult).

How's this?

PCI-E has 'lanes' of bandwidth, the Asus has two slots at 16x and 4x, the gigabyte has two at 16x / 8x. 8x is plenty of bandwidth for a 570, 4x may cause some bottlenecking.
It's a good motherboard but you might want to consider getting one with the two PCI-E's a bit further apart possibly.
[editline]4th November 2011[/editline]
nevermind, there's nothing that's a good deal and they're plenty far apart
Good to know. Would that revised motherboard (the second one, that Armotekma suggested) be ok, or is there one that you think would suit the PC (especially to fit the CPU cooler) better?
And, as for the keyboard, I misread. I think the red would be preferable.
The motherboard's fine, you can trust Armotekma. I'd just personally not get higher profile RAM like that. It's just cosmetic and gets in the way. And you just missed a 20% off sale on Rosewill keyboards, yesterday. I suggest you check the mechanical thread for your keyboard choosing.
[editline]4th November 2011[/editline]
Here's a good deal on a pretty standard red keyboard, though http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,fullsize&pid=fc500rrab
Alright, I switched to the Geil RAM for sure. It's funny about the sale, I told my mother about Black November as a way to get her to agree to buying it (since I'm an idiot and blew all the money I worked for), and then that.
I'll check out some cheaper ones, $130 seems a bit steep for a keyboard that has modified key response mechanisms.

Also thanks Shadaez and Armotekma, you're both such sweethearts.
Update here. Already asked Armotekma for advice, but my parents are being silly and have decided they do not want to bother with Newegg's payment plan (mainly because of a fiasco with bill me later), and so I'm looking for a Cyberpower-esque "pick your components" store whilst in Salt Lake City for the weekend.
I found this, which is laughably overpowered but, hilariously enough, acceptable because it's under a decent payment plan.
I'd like a few opinions on how "extreme" I should go with it, since max spec is around $3.5k apparently, with an i7-990x, 48GB of RAM (I know, I know), 12TB HDD, and 2-3 GTX590s.
So yeah, I know that's completely overkill, but I'd not need to upgrade for years upon years aside from buying another monitor or two.
Not only is it overkill, its also spending money on a cpu that has a shit performance/price ratio.
If you mainly want to play games on it, then just go with an i5 2500k and 580 (or whatever gpu/s you wish to spend money on) build.
Yeah, if/when we check the store out, I'm sure they'll let me customize it. I'll just bring the specs that I want to get now and see how much more it'll inevitably cost. An i5-2500k and a GTX570 is just fine for me.
Ugh, what a nightmare. I'd highly suggest never going to PC Laptops if you're buying from Utah. The guy tried to convince us to buy an i7-2600k, 650W PSU, and a single GTX 580 for $4,100.
I explained to the guy that I got that it was a business, but the markup was far from reasonable. There was also nearly no customization, the guy had very little experience with PCs (I asked if their GPUs came with aftermarket coolers and he merely said "We only buy the best"; a comment he used exclusively when he obviously did not know), and he even tried to get me to log in to my Newegg account on his PC to compare.
Oh, he also couldn't figure out which printer to print from and had to get one of the higher up guys to do it for him. Overall, if you want to be really lazy, I'd even prefer something like CyberPower over these guys.
[editline]12th November 2011[/editline]
The good news is, however, that it's gotten my parents to realize that I'm getting a "$4000+" PC for less than 2 grand, and I believe they are considering getting it again.
The final issue is warranties. Is it even worth it to get a 2 year warranty? I was under the impression that the 30 day is enough because parts usually fail due to an installation issue. 2 years seems to be a bad warranty, mainly because I see people having their PC die after 4 or 5 years as long as they were taking care of it.
Oh, and the reason they said they were charging $4000 was due to "Manufacturer guaranteed" lifetime replacement. Even still, that's at least $150 per item, and when I'm getting a warranty that costs more than the item itself, it'd be BETTER if it failed and I had to buy a new one rather than covering it under warranty.
Most of the parts have their own two to three year warranties, powersupplies generally have five, and a handful of cards have a lifetime warranty on them.
But you know if your parents insist on getting something along of the lines of a prebuilt, then you could check out some DIY combos on newegg, some of them are actually quite decent.
Only things that tend to be so so in those are the powersupplies and harddrives, and the cases are usually not so very appealing, but you can just as well buy a better harddrive and use the other one for just storage, especially at your budget.
What is your exact budget? I mainly want to know that so I could try and build you a PC.

Are you blind. Read the thread.

I'm sorry, I didn't see in the first post in his build where it said budget $1500 - $2000

There ya go, You can probably get it cheaper with some combo deals but that's what i'd buy if I had that much cash.
lmao 1050W powersupply
that is retarded
lmao 1050W powersupply
that is retarded
He said he wanted to SLI in the future and with what he was talking about in one of his earlier posts I wasn't sure if he wanted to 2 way or 3 way SLI, He can always lower it down if he doesn't need that much.
direct link to the motherboard
i do believe that you picked a motheboard that does not even support 3 way sli, in which case he wont even remotely need a 1050w powersupply
It's funny because all you did was take my exact build, changed the parts slightly for the worse: Slower speed on the RAM, 1050W PSU unnecessary even for Tri-SLI GTX570s, etc. For 70 bucks less, I'm basically getting an overkill PSU, an unnecessary case fan, and parts that I don't even want.
And what is your reason for changing my mechanical keyboard (which I explicitly stated I wanted if you'd actually read the thread) to a crappy "LOLGAMING" keyboard that uses rubber dome keys?
..... Didn't even look at your build and wtf are you talking about Rubber dome keys? The razer blackwidow is mechanical. Don't have to get pissed over a small mistake.
[editline]13th November 2011[/editline]
And the ram speed doesnt matter that much, you're still getting a beast gaming machine no matter what you get with that $2000 dollars you've supposedly got.
The blackwidow does actually use mechanical switches, but it is junk in comparison to an rk9000
but adding a motherboard that doesn't support 3way sli and a 1050w powersupply, even bothering with recommending a blackwidow is stupid
Also 1050w not neccesary for tri-sli 570's? You do realize those things will take a shit ton of power along with everything you wan't right now?
you do realize that it wont even be possible to tri sli it with the motherboard you specified
Also 1050w not neccesary for tri-sli 570's? You do realize those things will take a shit ton of power along with everything you wan't right now?
Ah, didn't bother to check it because I saw "Razer" and instantly disregarded it. I'm fairly against getting things "meant" for gaming because of the markups they entail.
Don't see why you wouldn't look at my build. At this point, I'm not looking for a new build, I'm looking for improvements on the old.
Plus the case fans were just to keep all this shit cool since you're shoving so much crap into one case if you decide to get 2 570's.
[editline]13th November 2011[/editline]
I didn't mean I didn't look at it at all, I meant I didn't add really look at all the details of everything you were getting.
I made a mistake get over it and just go with your original build its perfectly fine.
Well, you know, instead of telling me to get over it, you could admit that you didn't check what I had at all (otherwise you wouldn't have come up with a completely similar build).
Regardless, I appreciate the help, but it'd have been more beneficial if you'd have just taken a second to check my parts rather than suggest an entirely new build. 850 may be a bit under what I'd need for tri-SLI 570s, but it was never my intention to tri-SLI them. I'm only getting one now, and I won't get a second for a while. 850 is plenty of headroom for me at this point.

Well then I guess you're fine, and yes I admit I should've looked at the parts you listed a bit more in depth and if you're not going to Tri sli then 850 will be fine and I made a mistake. If you ever make another build or come up with something else I will thouroughly check everything.
