Well, my PC has been lagging like shit lately, and well got any tips? Yes, i know Defrag and reformat, but anything else? Also i've lowered my startup programs to only what i need. So what does Facepunch recommend? Full Specs: Laptop (HP Compaq nx8220) 2.13ghz Single Core Processor. 1gb of RAM Graphics Card: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600 128mb SoundMAX Digital Audio HDD 74gb, 1gb free Defragmented twice.
Full specs?
Your best bet is to check your bios for any settings that may boost over all performance. My motherboard didn't come with ACHI enabled which is a queuing driver for SATA. Stuff like that can help your computer perform better. Try using Linux. Certain distros come with superior file systems and meet the needs of your laptop. I'm guessing you don't use very many Windows programs or play any games so putting a light weight Linux on your laptop would do you some good since there are many open source alternatives to some windows programs you may use.
1GB free? FREE UP AT LEAST 8GB.
1GB free? FREE UP AT LEAST 8GB.
Good point! You need page file, man.
Get a new HD and see if you can add more RAM in. And I would probably start thinking about reinstalling Windows.
New dual core proccesor too. EDIT: oops
It's a laptop! I doubt he wants to buy new hardware for it, he's trying to get all the use he can out of it without spending money.
New dual core proccesor too.
While you can replace a laptop's CPU, doing this isn't quite common.
Reformat or start deleting shit, 1GB of free space is terrible.
Eh okay. To be honest, i've never had more then 6gb of free space since last year. Reformat is not an option, since i don't have anything to back it up on.
Purchase one of these to offset a few gigs of data from your laptop, or to backup for a reformat. Honestly a reformat will get you better performance, as you have a clean install without a massive registry or fragmentation or anything. It's the cheapest drive I could find on amazon, It's the same price as buying a PC game, It shouldn't be too much trouble to get one of these. The solution isn't Linux. It's deleting old shit.
Vista or XP?
CCleaner. www.ccleaner.com Defraggler. www.defraggler.com TuneUp Utilities 2009 http://www.tune-up.com/download/ (free 30d trial) ^This one helps
Vista or XP?
XP. I'll search up those tools, Anzonix, but i've already been a fan of ccleaner since 07. [editline]11:37AM[/editline] Defraggler sounds cool, but what files need should i defrag?
Defraggler sounds cool, but what files need should I defrag?
Because it might give you some free space. And it will improve your HDD performance. (just a little) Am I right?
Install green LEDs.
reformat [editline]12:01PM[/editline] more ram, faster hdd because it's probably 5400rpm
Buy a hard drive.
Gentlemen, its a laptop. :downs:
Because it might give you some free space. And it will improve your HDD performance. (just a little) Am I right?
Sorry for my fail English before. But yeah once when i defragged, i lost 800mb :argh: Guess i'll start defrag tomorrow before i go to school.
The solution isn't Linux. It's deleting old shit.
Actually Linux takes less space than XP, and is a lot more light weight on system ressources. The best solution would be to do both. But it seems the OP can't find a single file to delete.
Gentlemen, its a laptop. :downs:
Correct me if I'm wrong but he can replace the current HDD with a bigger one. But he will need to reinstall his OS ofcourse.
Correct me if I'm wrong but he can replace the current HDD with a bigger one. But he will need to reinstall his OS ofcourse.
Right, and some laptops come with two hard drive slots.
Sorry for my fail English before. But yeah once when i defragged, i lost 800mb :argh: Guess I'll start defrag tomorrow before i go to school.
Well, you should defrag the whole HD. (C:/ I guess?)
OP will have a teensy issue with defragging unless he deletes some of that old shit.
Right, and some laptops come with two hard drive slots.
replace
replace
What's your point? If his laptop has a second slot he doesn't even need to replace, he can just use both. You're the one with shitty reading skills...
