I honestly don't understand how these controllers would work, I just can't imagine using those 2 circles.
Ever played a game on touch screen? I'm going to make a solid guess on the pad feel and hope for the feel of a textured laptop trackpad, but the sensitivity of a touch screen. it'd suck ass if it's only as responsive as most track pads and I know they'd go back to the drawing board if it was sketchy like that depending on game or preference you definitely could use it fully as a trackpad 'drag' style, or opt for more joystick-like positional output, where I'm personally hoping it would be like this: • everything from that inner ridge out will equate to constant directional motion like a joystick being pushed that direction, varying how far out you touch • the inside of the small center circle is still trackpad-drag motion for twitch movements; this would avoid weird circle wiggles like an oversensitive joystick or trying to use a drawing tablet in an FPS. It'd allow much finer control when needed and wouldn't clash with sliding your thumb to the outer directional control because you'd naturally drag in that direction in the first place
People forget to mention that each pad can be pressed like a button and act as a 4-way or 8-way button pad.

This is nothing like trackpads from Laptops or touchpads from phones. The Steamcontroller delivers a widely better controlfeedback. There has only been positive reactions to it.
I'm more interested in whether they will add joystick emulation to the trackpads.

At least thats what I'm getting from what they've said of it so far, so what you are saying should be very doable
