• Increase bandwidth on router

I have the metrocast 7mb/s plan. Whenever i'm torrenting something or downloading something on steam, the internet is barely usable. I have a wrt54g2 router. Any help would be appreciated.
that's because the torrent is leeching all your bandwidth. turn your torrent's max speed down
I havnt been doing torrents lately though, only steam
Exactly; downloading anything reduces the bandwidth left overall. If you are downloading at 700KB/s then you are using all of your internet connection up and things will be slower. You generally want to reserve a small amount of generally web usage.
Throttle your upload speed to ~40kb/s. Works for me and I have an 8mb/1mb internet plan. I was addressing the problem when he has Steam running only. The upload point still stands and you should limit it to 10KB/s below your maximum.
Only downloading stuff on steam, it runs perfectly. How can i throttle steam speed? Oh yeah, uploading a youtube video makes it impossible to browse

The youtube aspect you're gonna have to learn to deal with, but with torrents, you can limit your upload.
