I have the metrocast 7mb/s plan.
Whenever i'm torrenting something or downloading something on steam, the internet is barely usable. I have a wrt54g2 router. Any help would be appreciated.
that's because the torrent is leeching all your bandwidth. turn your torrent's max speed down

Exactly; downloading anything reduces the bandwidth left overall. If you are downloading at 700KB/s then you are using all of your internet connection up and things will be slower. You generally want to reserve a small amount of generally web usage.
Throttle your upload speed to ~40kb/s. Works for me and I have an 8mb/1mb internet plan.

(From personal experience) I've found that downloading stuff usually won't affect anything, it's uploading that does.
I was addressing the problem when he has Steam running only. The upload point still stands and you should limit it to 10KB/s below your maximum.

That's, once again, because uploading stuff affects your speeds. The youtube aspect you're gonna have to learn to deal with, but with torrents, you can limit your upload.
