No, no no no. Just stop. Stop, go back, unbreak the canon, please.
The Belmont family has gone from "Lineage of Badass Vampire Hunters destined to fight an unending war with Dracula" to "Lone guy filled with man-angst calling himself Dracula for no specific reason other than so that they can say it has Dracula."

Here, this offsets my annoyance some.

Well, you could always shut off your senses and call the Lords of Shadow continuity non-canon, looking back on the original Vampire Killer continuity as the only valid continuity.
It's a different direction, sure, but you can't say it's all bad just because of a change of theme. It'd be cool if we could return to the old canon, certainly; there are still a few more things to explore in the old timeline, like an official game based around Julius Belmont in 1999, or a continuation of the Soma Cruz story arc, or even check for some spots in the chronology where we haven't seen a Belmont v Dracula.
Currently this is what we have, though, but don't pre-judge before you eat the pudding. Besides, the guy with the sword might be the new "vampire hunter", maybe even a Belmont. I dunno if there's any evidence that Gabriel had any relatives, but the possibility of there being some kind of Belmont family is still there.

Order of Ecclesia was wonderful and didn't involve the Belmonts at all, but it didn't do anything to break the canon, just expand upon it in a different direction.

He had the gold trim, which is visible in the trailer, and wielded a sword and was technically a hero in the series.
Also, Gabriel was an orphan.
You have some points there, that be true.
Also, I just wondered; how would Alucard factor into the Lords of Shadow continuity? If the supposed LoS Alucard is Dracula's son like in the original timeline, then one could deduce that in the centuries between Lords of Shadow 1 & 2, Gabriel/Dracula remarries like in the original continuity, has a kid with this timeline's equivalent of Lisa (Alucard's mom), and later events transpire to cause her death, likely at the hands of human peasants slinging accusations of witchcraft, reigniting Dracula's hatred for humanity, whilst Alucard takes her last words, "Do not hate humans etc", to heart, and later leaves, only to return later and confront his father.
It's either that, or the LoS Alucard is the son of a different vampire lord, or perhaps he's just a vengeful wizard-knight this time around. With the reshuffling they've done, it probably wouldn't be surprising, though it'd be far wiser to have the LoS Alucard still be Dracula's son; keep at least SOME ties to the original lore.
It feels like they are going to ignore the first game's prologue.
"Lone guy filled with man-angst calling himself Dracula for no specific reason other than so that they can say it has Dracula."
Isn't that pretty much how the canon Dracula (Nykvist?) came to be too? I agree that making Gabriel Dracula is silly (if Lords of Shadow is supposed to be in the same timeline as the other games).
EDIT: Did Gabriel call himself Dracula all the 900 years? Maybe the unknown man in the trailer is a young Leon Belmont.
