Classic Polygon.
I've always hated the concept of 'gender identity'. I have no problem with trans, however it's shit like the topic in the article that just grinds my gears. Are you a guy who wants to have surgery to become a girl? Then you are a she, her, etc. Are you a girl who wants to have surgery to become a guy? Then you are a he, him, etc. (Note the above is simply my opinion, if anyone who is transgender would like to defend the statement I would love to hear about it) Polygon's simply trying to stir the soup because Maxis did not include bullshit pronouns like Ne, Ve, Ey, Ze, Xe, etc. Trying to punch Maxis and EA while they're already struggling with even more bullshit complaining about lack of pools and toddlers. This article is horseshit and it's stuff like this that pisses me off when it comes to the topic of transgenders.
Polygon does know this is a video game right [editline]4th August 2014[/editline] Like every time I hear about video game devs speaking about stuff like this chances are it's gonna be Polygon asking and I have to wonder if Polygon actually knows what a video game is
More whining about video games at its finest.
If you made a male character but said they identify as female what effect would that have on the game at all? Aside from a very small handful of text boxes the games never even use pronouns for gender. The most you get is "Talk to X" or "Tickle X". How would you even implement gender identity in The Sims? Add another option below sex that says gender but has the same options and makes no difference to anything?
Fuck respecting people's lives. LET ME PUT THEM IN A 4x4 BOX.
Just use he, she, and they. There's always been a neutral pronoun.
Just use he, she, and they. There's always been a neutral pronoun.
But people would think you're referring to them in the plural, and that would sound ridiculous. Calling them Xe is a lot more reasonable!
Just use he, she, and they. There's always been a neutral pronoun.
Yep. There's also the issue of localizing all those weird pronouns (xe and whatever) into other languages... and the fact that besides an extremely small minority, the majority of transgender people are fine with he/she/they. [editline]4th August 2014[/editline] (to the extent of my knowledge)
You can make all sorts of valid arguments if you like, but I find their explanation perplexingly stupid. "Being inclusive would be disrepectful to the people we would be including, because it's a gameplay feature." You know you already have homosexuality as a gameplay feature. Is that being disrespectful? No, that's complete nonsense.

The real reason is that doing so ultimately wouldn't have an effect on the game. It'd be a pointless change and would be a waste of time and resources to implement. Then they pass that reasoning off to Mr. Marketing who needs to find a prettied up way or saying that while making it sound as unoffensive as possible. This is just how the industry works :v:

They don't even speak a real language, nobody's using pronouns, and the modding community can just add whatever niches they like
"The Sims 4 - has not allowed players to create characters who aren’t either male or female." What do you want? Hermaphrodite? No. You either create a female character or a male character. It's a sex option, not a gender option.
whatever happened to simply torturing your sims
whatever happened to simply torturing your sims
No pools.
No pools.
torture them with fire instead, no pool to jump into
I just don't get it There are 4 choices: 1. You have a penis and identify as a male 2. You have a penis and identify as a female 3. You have a vagina and identify as a female 4. You have a vagina and identify as a male. How can you not be one of these four things?

Their explanation was dumb, not necessarily the decision.

You say you hate the concept of "gender identity" despite holding a more progressive view on gender identity than the vast majority of people out there. I think you misunderstand what transgender people generally complain about when it comes to pronouns. Basically keep doing what you're doing but stop thinking that transgender people are upset at you - they're not
The fuck is this, chemistry class?
Yes, this is. My Pronouns are C3H5N3O9/C4H8Cl2S
And this is why i love our language where we do not have gender distinctions in personal pronouns

Maybe you feel like you're neither or in between. It's not worth stressing over, just let people be, man.
Yes, this is. My Pronouns are C3H5N3O9/C4H8Cl2S
Well, my pronouns are actually antonyms.
The fuck is this, chemistry class?
I did a quick google search to pretend I was smart. I don't give enough of a shit to care about it normally :v:
UGH i'm a transpecies other-fluid textbook kin and this thread triggers me!!1
