Why not just power the wheels directly? Seems much more efficient than trying to get it to skate

Like this but with four legs for walking on rough terrain
They said in the video they are going to do that, this is just to begin teaching it to balance on wheels.

If you can have it do this without power flawlessly, you can pretty account for any problem, including a wheels motor dying out
