Never.
I often wonder just how effective foil is to other (widely available) materials.
I prefer the beer can method.

Technically all it does is shield the antenna and collect more of the wi-fi signal.
Using any metal will yield the same results.
You're better off building a yagi, dish, or helix antenna that would yield results 100 times better. They're not that hard to build.

Or just get a better adapter with more power output and signal sensitivity.
get a second router, put dd-wrt on it, make it a repeater bridge.
its what i did.
changing the channel it broadcasts on also works, that and increasing the voltage to the antenna
