Well...
My moms friend got a laptop from his place of buisness for free. It is old so they let him have it. The problem is, They will not let him onto the admin account since they use the same passwords across all company laptops.
Anyway I can crack the password?
OS is windows XP 32 bit
OS re installation is NOT an option.
Use Ophcrack
How easy is it to use?
And does it have a possibility of damaging any OS files that would make it unbootable?
Usually i would not give a shit but its not my computer.
Option 2: Reinstall windows.

You burn the disc. You boot from it. It finds the password easily. No, it won't touch any OS files.

Waste of time, easier to use OphCrack
OphCrack, agreed.
I don't see the point in using OphCrack, even if it uses rainbow tables, to get the admin password. In a bit more time it takes to burn the disk and set it up, you could have a clean OS to work with.
You may run into alot of legal trouble cracking the password of it. My dad, a auditor for Reanault, nearly lost his job and got a large fine for trying so.
A clean OS install is a good idea for several reasons; one of which being that you don't have to go around cracking passwords. Another reason being that you clear out all the old junk in one sweep and avoid coming up against any other locks or system settings they have in place.

Well if it would be MY laptop I'd do this, but since it's someone else's laptop I wouldn't just format it and reinstall XP. He probably would need to buy a new copy of Windows anyway unless the sticker is still on it and he can get a Windows XP OEM disc

Will put in OP "OS re installation is not an option"

Anyone have a second option in case I can not boot from a CD?
Why can't you reinstall the OS?
He does not want to reinstall his programs.
Besides... There is near nothing on it. The hard drive is 20 gigs full.
Mostly of thermal scans and stuff.
you can run ophcrack from within windows as i recall, so just boot up, open ophcrack -> load appropriate tables -> select the admin account from the list -> decode -> wait -> you have the password
Yeah, download the XP tables and ophcrack from here:
Ophcrack: http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php
Tables: http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/tables.php
I'd go with the bigger tables though, they seem to work better.
If you can still access another account I would suggest the easy solution.
Press Start > Run. Type: "control userpasswords2" (Without the "s). You can change passwords there (without requiring the current password)
