At the same time you could pay 3 cents on the steam market for a copy or go to one of those sites that has bots that dispense dota 2 copies.
In the end even if it was labeled as a game to buy on the steam store you were paying for the item sets.
I am assuming people who wanted to play dota 2 are capable of doing a bit of research before buying on the steam store though, I think they would.

There was a market of selling dota 2 beta keys. They were smart enough to cash in on these people.

I WISH it was every so often!... They gave you 5 invites each bloody week, it can't get any more free than that.

knowing blizz, they'll throw in some WoW ingame items, some hearthstone cards, and idk... a merloc pet or something
