• Should References be allowed in SH?

Title pretty much says it all. After take a look at this thread: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1448334 It was clear things were getting out of hand to me. Seems silly to ban people for referencing games on a largely gaming-based forum, regardless of subforum. Decided it might be a good idea to discuss it here rather than there. Hopefully discussion won't be censored here.
No. It's good they're finally cleaning SH up because it's been the asshole of the forums for awhile. We should bring back Austin Power puns, though.
sure, I don't give a fuck. I only go there for news anyways. The reference comments are amusing at most but aren't harmful, but then again I truly do not give a fuck.
Eh depends, 99% of the time I would say no, but the guy getting banned for saying something about Payday 2 when the robber was wearing a fucking official payday mask was retarded.
if i can't make jokes about Ridge Racer in a thread about Boko Haram massacres then how the fuck am i supposed to relate?
if you can't go a thread without making ~epic~ references then you need to figure out how to post better
I can only relate to real life events with video game references. Don't these NAZI MODS understand? GOSH! [editline]28th January 2015[/editline] I AM A GAMER AND I AM PROUD
First off, lemme thank you for finally taking some initiative to discuss this in the proper environment, meaning not in an active thread, where discussing the rules is going to do nothing but derail it. This "reference" thing is a new rule that we're still experimenting with. It is currently a rule, so I have been enforcing it when I see it broken. Feedback like this could be pretty helpful in determining exactly where we're going to take that rule, however, because we're still figuring it out on our end, too. As long as you keep it civil and on track, I'm personally okay with this thread being open.
here's a top tip: if you dont have anything interesting to say, don't post You don't have to fit in a wicked zinger or videogame reference into every SH thread.
I don't see why we need them Sure some of them can be funny but most of them are low effort and just waste time
My personal position on this rule is that, on a general basis, these kinds of references should not be allowed. They contribute nothing of value to the conversation. In the instance of that moon thread, replying for no other reason than to post a screenshot of a video game or a short clip from a movie, with your only link between them being, "look, they both have the moon in them!" is dumb as heck. Exceptions may exist; such as referencing video games or movies in a thread that is actually related to video games or movies. But, I know a couple other mods are taking a "let them have their fun" approach, which is also valid. We're working things out. Having some community opinion on the subject couldn't hurt!
I have to say no. Basically what BDA said.
Why limit what we can say? God knows we have enough trouble finding shit to say besides the usual 'god how awful' comments every SH thread gets. This is a gaming forum, people want to make gaming references to contextualise news. Let them. If they're shit or inappropriate, people will dumb them. If anything, ban people for derailing over these posts.
Won't this just drive evermore obscure and veiled references? I.e doubletalk I know its meant to cut down on shitposting, but if anything when its very overtly and obviously applied to something like 20 people at once in a thread it does anything but cut down on it. If that many people get banned for something at once, either they're all blatant shitposters or the mod is being too harsh.
No because more often then not they are forced/half assed and take up like the first 10 posts of "Haha I made a funny!"

I don't mind if references are done in threads where it's about a funny topic, like a girl almost being named Nutella. But not really in a morbid/sad thread. That shit is best left outside. Especially jokes that are plain rude and are not funny.

I agree a lot of the references are quite strained but that doesn't mean we should ban them. Them being 'unnecessary' doesn't mean we should ban them either, that's ridiculous. It's just a few (usually) harmless jokes. If they annoy you, dumb them and move on.
On the other hand, Facepunch is a community mostly brought together by Garry's Mod and Rust. Gaming references should not honestly be unexpected.

I honestly think it depends. If the thread becomes a flood of "look at this reference" "no look at this reference" without any actual discussion, then yeah, you should crack down on that. Especially if it's some shit like: "a gunman shot up a place? uh oh, better call simon!!!" [t]http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/gurennlagann/images/3/3d/GL_Gunmen.png/revision/latest?cb=20140722101421[/t] Where they're reaching really hard with the reference. Or like DoritoBandit, who was just posting completely unrelated references, stretching the page with a dozen videos in one post, derailing and having useless references while specifically quoting instances of people getting banned for derailing and posting nothing but references, and just overall having the post quality of a 10 year old. His original ban should've been for a week. If they make some effort to also talk about the subject at hand, then you should probably give them a pass. Sobek- probably should've had a reduced ban. He did try to make a little effort to ask how much helium-3 was on the moon and how feasible the plan was. On the other hand, the article answered that question, so maybe you should have added "didn't read the article" to his ban reason. Still, that was more effort than other posters. And the whole moon reference thing was sort of a grey area anyway, since there's apparently a ton of media about mining the moon. The thread about the robber with a Payday mask, though, should have been a lot more lenient about the bans, since they were directly related. Maybe a short ban since they weren't contributing beyond the reference.
I'd say no, with the exception being that if 70%+ of your post is a constructive post to the thread a pun might be allowed to slip in.
On the other hand, Facepunch is a community mostly brought together by Garry's Mod and Rust. Gaming references should not honestly be unexpected.
gaming references are fine when they're at least somewhat related to the issue at hand, but the way these posts usually go is by making an incredibly tone deaf and irrelevant reference for no apparent reason except to get a few pointless ratings. some of those are not only stupid, but also downright insensitive. *article about several people getting horribly killed in a hostage crisis* "haha just like payday right dudes???"
this isn't 9gag, go away with your shitty video game jokes (I'm talking about the people who just cannot stop making them) [editline]28th January 2015[/editline] this is coming from a dude who has spend his entire life around video games if you're unable to talk in anything but video game references then there is no doubt you are a bigger loser than me and that's actually pretty depressing [editline]28th January 2015[/editline] like really do you actually believe it's appropriate to make a video game joke in a thread about the holocaust [editline]28th January 2015[/editline]
here's a top tip: if you dont have anything interesting to say, don't post You don't have to fit in a wicked zinger or videogame reference into every SH thread.
if you have to try to think of a zinger post to say then that's a sign that you already shouldn't post it.
I think it should be allowed in very specific instances. For example, recently a guy robbed a store wearing an official Payday 2 mask. Discussions related to the game are unavoidable at that point because they are intrinsic to the discussion at hand because of a concrete relation between the event and the game, and should probably be allowed. But if any robbery or theft happens and the only relation is that a robbery took place and people say "JUST LIKE IN THE AMAZING HIT VIDEO GAME PAYDAY 2," it's threadshitting.
Only Garry's Mod and Rust references allowed, to even it up in the middle.
I say allow them, especially in topics that aren't morbid. Someone making a video game joke isn't the reason SH is a hellhole, the reason it's a hellhole is because no one that regulalry posts there knows how to debate reasonably and agree to disagree, or to just shut their mouth and not reply.
this is coming from a dude who has spend his entire life around video games if you're unable to talk in anything but video game references then there is no doubt you are a bigger loser than me and that's actually pretty depressing
What's the point on calling/bashing yourself out to express what you feel?
I'd say as long as the reference wouldn't be insensitive it'd be fine.
