Hey i was thinking about purchasing a new laptop for various activities. I would like to be able to play some games on it. Such as cs:go, Eve, and world of tanks. They aren't very demanding games but once in a while i enjoy gta 5 if that's possible. I also need it to be able to do image editing, sound editing and various other activities. Thanks for your help! here are some i have been looking at. Any specific reason you need it to be a laptop? You can build an extremely mobile ITX desktop and get far more power for your money.

Even if the tower was literally the size of a usb stick you still need to haul around a monitor, keyboard, and various cables to hookup unless you're expecting to have those where you're going. My situation might be pretty specialized because I travel a lot and use my laptop for work, but there's plenty of very good reasons to have a gaming laptop rather than desktop

But i know i'll be bringing it around alot and playing games on it. It's just so much more convenient
Yeah I realize that, but I've had a big giant gaming laptop and I've had a tiny little ITX box. They both fit into the same bag just fine and I much preferred the ITX box. If you're bringing to to classes and such though I'd suggest the MSI I think. The GPU is a bit worse, but it's more power efficient and the build quality is better than the Lenovo, and should be better than the ASUS too. Plus with better support than either. The ASUS would be my second pick I guess.
I would also go with the MSI, and you might even find it cheaper. If you can extend your budget a little bit, I would recommend the MSI GE62 Apache, which has the same CPU but a GeForce 965M instead.

The only hard statistics on laptops I've ever seen put Asus as the most reliable brand but it didn't include MSI and it was a few years ago.
It seems like i'll be getting the MSI laptop in case anyone can reccomend something better
I've settled on this laptop, second opinions? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232404

Good choice, should be able to run absolutely anything at medium or better.
This is easy to solve. Cables can fit in a bag. A tiny retina display with a DIY mount on the ITX system could fit in a bag. An ITX system could fit in a bag. A fold out keyboard and gaming mouse could fit in a bag. Why not? I remember Tek Syndicate already creating something like this and actually pulling it off. I don't know about price but it is definitely practical.
Yeah but he needs to take it to class so it wouldn't really work at all for OP.
Honestly I would not recommend getting a gaming laptop if you're going to use it for home and class. I'd save the money for a solid gaming desktop, and a smaller tablet/hybrid with a keyboard cover for class. I was in your same boat, I bought a heavy and chunky gaming laptop and it rarely left my room. I could be wrong though, I don't know your whole situation

I'll not only be bringing this with me to class and such but i'll also be bringing it with me on airplanes and such. I was also thinking of picking up a surface 2 pro for purely note taking. I think i'll be doing that.

Better battery life, and about the same price for a Surface Pro 2 used as a Surface 3.

Surface 3 is excellent for planes due to size and touch capabilities.
I really like newer Acer laptops. The 4K screen on the V15 Nitro Black Edition is one of the best around and their other 1080p IPS screens are great (notebookcheck review) . They're also slim, light, have fairly acceptable battery life, don't contain a jet turbine (like clevo laptops) and are very maintainable even without a replacable battery because the bottom panel comes off as one piece. The only downsides are spotty driver support, medium-tier build quality and a kinda bad keyboard, but even then my V7 has been my favorite laptop out of the tens I have owned. Newer high-end Acers come close to being plastic Macbooks at half the price.
So then, i might pick up the laptop, and a surface 3.
Impractical in this situation. The OP has gone with an Acer Nitro and a Surface 3.
I never said OP should. All I said is that it's possible.
I never said OP should. All I said is that it's possible.
Eh, well it's not what he really wanted, tbh. I mean he could've gone with a small PC but really, it depends how big the dorm is and whether he's gonna move out in the next few years to a new house. I would've done the same.
So then, i might pick up the laptop, and a surface 3.
Question though why would you get both a laptop and a surface?
Question though why would you get both a laptop and a surface?
Well, i realized the dorm i'm staying in probably won't be the biggest and i don't really know if i'll be able to fit a desktop in there. So i'm thinking the Asus Rog laptop, and the surface 3 purely for note taking and the such.
Well, i realized the dorm i'm staying in probably won't be the biggest and i don't really know if i'll be able to fit a desktop in there. So i'm thinking the Asus Rog laptop, and the surface 3 purely for note taking and the such.
Honestly I'd grab the surface and throw together an ITX desktop. It's what I really wish I had done for the dorms. My 18.4" monster of a laptop was very little use outside of just sitting on my desk. I spent $2000 on it, but I really wish I had spent $400-500 on a small netbook/tablet and $1500 on an ITX desktop. They can get in some really tiny packages, and fit right behind a 22" 1080p monitor.
Now I'm confused... all of a sudden we're back to ITX systems. What do you think of it now? It's really compact, you could fit it just about anywhere.
I don't think i will be building a ITX system, sorry guys.
So i'm going to do it today when i get home after everything. If you guys have any last objections please tell me, if not i'm going to purchase this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834232404 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834735048&cm_re=microsoft_surface-_-34-735-048-_-Product Thank you all so much for your help too!
The surface pro 3 is overkill tbh for what you want to do with it. Save a decent amount of cash and just get the 4gb Surface 3.
