Direct Ethernet cable connection from Win7 to XP issues

Hey there FPers, so thing is I want to connect a old [B]Bangho[/B] desktop with XP to my laptop which runs... you guessed it, 7. How can I get the Bangho to access my Public documents on the laptop through a direct Ethernet connection?

This would mean a Age of Empires II match with my cousin tonight.

Is using a cross-over ethernet cable out of the question?

You need a crossover cable. You can buy them, or if you know what you're doing with the wire order and a crimper, you can modify a standard ethernet cable.

If you have a switch or hub laying around, you can connect the two to that instead, no crossover needed.

most if not all modern NICs can detect the cable and change output so the type of cable has not mattered for a while now

Yea, pretty much all modern NICs are auto-sensing. Just set a static IP on both machines and connect to them via smb.
