A bit old but hey why not make a discussion 'bout it. copy pasta incoming
Eat that Gulftown: AMD officials have not only confirmed that it will release a hexa-core processor next year – but it will be backwards compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ motherboards. Although heavily reported as a rumor that an AMD six-core was coming to consumer desktops, the company had not confirmed rumors. That is until Monday, when AMD officials told Maximum PC that the chip was a done deal. “We are all about platform longevity and long-lived upgrade paths,” and AMD spokesman said in a sideways ding at its competitor Intel which has a penchant for requiring new sockets for its CPUs. Intel currently has three different socket infrastructures on its desktop computers – all incompatible. The confirmation also comes one day before Intel’s three-day IDF conference which usually blots out all news from competitors for days.

AMD’s chip is codenamed Thuban and will feature all six cores on single 45nm die. Thuban will feature an integrated DDR3 controller. The company didn’t confirm branding but the chip is expected to be labeled as the Phenom II X6. The chip is derivative of the six-core Opteron chip which made its earlier this summer. Extrapolating from the hexa-core Opteron, Thuban is likely to be a 346mm2 chip and have a massive 904 million transistors. As a comparison, Intel’s Core i7-975 Extreme Editions have 731 million transistors on a 262mm2 die, the Core i5-750 has 774 million transistors with 296mm2 die and the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 758 million transistors on a 258mm2 die. The chip is expected to have 3MB of L2 and 6MB of L3 cache. The company did not specific initial clock speeds but they are not expected to be as high as the quad-core parts. That’s likely due to added thermal output from the two additional cores. Thuban is not due until sometime next year and is unlikely to beat Intel’s Gulftown to stores shelves. Intel’s Gulftown, likely to be called Core i9, when it is released, will slip into existing LGA1366 boards and will offer 12-threads to the OS with six of those coming from cores, and the other six from HyperThreading.
Wondering how much these will cost. Probably, will be less than the i9 since those are expected to beat the AMD hexa-core but it seems like a good alternative for CAD and 3D Modeling guys who can't afford an i9.
AMD has been doing great with upgradability since AM2. I was thinking about picking up one of those $99 Quad Cores, but maybe if I wait long enough I can get it cheaper. Also, I still think HyperThreading is dumb.

Gives me a lot of options.
why is hyperthreading dumb
Hyperthreading was dumb. It didn't do shit until the i7's came out
Sounds good, AMD has been great with upgradability, price, and performance!
AM2+ support? Maybe i don't need a new mobo
Most people don't even know these other six-core processors exist already, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103691 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117176
AM2+ support? Maybe i don't need a new mobo
As long as you update your BIOS. Some motherboards might be old enough that the manufacturer stopped updating the BIOS.

I mean, I know you were just saying that they existed, but just in case someone was ready to buy them or something. Also, I'm not a huge AMD fan, but this is pretty cool, and the socket compatibility is cool as well.

I game on an Opteron 170. However, those chips are way too expensive to only game on. :v:

Soon, intel will release their octcore CPU
Soon, intel will release their octcore CPU
Intel doesn't even have six core CPUs other than a couple Xeons.
Intel doesn't even have six core CPUs other than a couple Xeons.
soon they will release them
soon they will release them
Yes, but I'm saying that Intel won't release an 8 core CPU until after they've released six cores. The Core series isn't going to have more cores than Xeons do.
I think they scrapped the 6cores
Intel doesn't even have six core CPUs other than a couple Xeons.
Octo = 8, not 6. Besides, Intel had already announced their accomplishment on 8-core CPUs a while ago
I love you, AMD.
I guess my new pc will be an amd fanboi-pc. Amd cpu and Ati gpu.
Don't server CPU's lack certain instructions available on regular CPU's? like 3dnow, 3dnow+, EEE4.2..etc
According to Wikipedia the Opteron has all those features up to the Barcelona cores, but anything after that I'm not sure. (it IS wikipedia afterall) Though after a rather short search, I can't find any indication that Istanbul has those features.
I can't wait for these to come out, because even if they're too expensive, we can expect price drops for the quads at least.
Intel doesn't even have six core CPUs other than a couple Xeons.
why do you assume they have to go 4 > 6 > 8? hell we went 2 > 4 > 3
If only there were nonshitty motherboards with those sockets. :( I've been burned by taiwanese bullshit. So it is absolutely decided that my next motherboard will come directly from Intel. Which is apaprantly the only decent western designer of motherboards.
