I'm trying to download a file from the "L4D mod emporium 2" topic, but it's a "source add-on file" or a "steam add-on file", can't quite remember which. I've never seen this type of file before, how do you install it?

Edit: a little more info, When I first downloaded it, I opened the file and it said it installed, but it had no effect, nothing changed, and if I try to install it again it says it can't because it's already in use.
P.S. yeah it was a "source add-on"

Yeah, I'm only used to the "copy into the game folders and overwrite" kind of stuff so I'm a little lost here.
