I'm trying to put together a basic gaming build. I already have a monitor and keyboard/mouse. I'd prefer Intel/Nivida, but if I would get better performance for cheaper with an AMD build, I'm fine with that.
Assuming you don't need an optical drive or any other peripherals this is my recommendation: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1nT8J

Nice build... Look at my recommendation: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1ob05
So I kept the case and HDD from your build, I replaced i5 3350p with an FX 6300 and added a cooler also I choose a bit more expensive motherboard that is excellent for overclocking.
So if he knows to overclock then he should overclock FX 6300 to 4Ghz to match i5 3350p multi-threading performance and he can further overclock it to outperform it. You can't OC i5 3350p.
I managed to save enough cash to put an Radeon HD 7850 w/ 2Gb VRAM and Dual Fans...
Games in very near future will use 6 core, if he overclocks FX 6300 to 4Ghz or above then he will have on par or better CPU performance in those games. Also AMD's upcoming Steamroller FX will arrive in 2014 and it should be 25% faster than Piledriver FX clock to clock according to AMD.
If that's so then upgrade to an 6 core Steamroller FX would be an amazing jump for him and cheap.
