That's the most stupid thing to achieve:
"tricking" players into thanking devs for free updates...
I wonder how the Blizzard PR team would "word" this
"it was Mike Morhaime that told the team to “just release the stuff for free.”
if it was paid updates/dlc.
Mike Morhaime, the messiah of free game updates, praise him!
They have no obligation to release free updates. They're obliged to fix issues not serve you a dessert after you had your meal.

Diablo 3 was a failure when it started. Not only did it have bugs, the game felt imbalanced, linear, bare bones and basically not triple A material content-wise and gameplay-wise. That's a huge mistake on their part.
Another huge mistake, is obviously the auction house. It stained their and the game's reputation. It was an extremely disagreeable feature that made players ecouraged to happily and sometimes baselessly jump into the hate bandwagon
The patches they released so far made the game so drastically different, and so much more addictive, it really feels like a completely different game.
Sure, Reaper of Souls was a paid expansion, but the price was bearable for the content it added, and ever since it came out the amount of content that has been added could've practically filled the quota for another expansion.
But they did it for free.
I already enjoyed the game back when Reaper of Souls first came out. Now so many things have changed I can barely recognise it anymore.
Not to mention that publicity-wise it's important that they emphasise that everything was for free so that players who bought the game and hated it would be encouraged to try it again and recommend it to their friends if they like it now. Business-wise, it sure as hell worked.
