i legitimately wonder why people smurf sometimes
i've asked quite a few of them questions but they never answer
i've also been guessing that they are selling the accounts that get to masters and above, but none will talk to me to confirm or deny it

It's an even more degrading form of cheating than downloading hacks is imo.
Instead of directly giving yourself an unfair advantage to win (hacks), you're pretending to be new so matchmaking puts you up against actual new/low rank players, because you suck that much at the game and can't handle the slightest challenge.

You're generalizing way too much.
I made a second account because my friends are lower rank than I am and I'd like to play with them.
When the other options are 'derank on purpose' - which is a serious dick move to teammates, 'play casual' - when I prefer ranked or 'don't play with them'...
Every now and then I play it solo just for the fun of it, but I don't really see the issue if I'm not being toxic.
Usually I use it to practice heroes I'm not that good at or to further improve my strong heroes, improve awareness, tactics etc without having to also play my absolute best to keep up.
I know there are people that smurf to feel better / have it easy, but don't assume everyone smurfs for that reason.

I know people buy alt accounts to have fun with lower rank friends, I have no qualms with that.
If a one-trick (example, not against you) wants to improve at other heroes but can't because their one-trick account inflated their rank much higher than their actual skill level, then I don't see any problem with making an alt.
But I believe MeepDarknessM was talking about the negative form of smurfing, the kind where people dump money into multiple new smurf accounts as soon as their current one gets banned or ranked back up to a high enough skill level.
