So, I keep in touch with my friends with Steam. I have heard rumors that Steam (when run with Wine) does work, but the chat doesn't work.
Do you think that Valve will ever make a Linux-compatible Steam version? Because I use Steam for chatting mostly, and my fresh Ubuntu installation feels lovely without it.
Has there been any kind of a chat API released for Steam Friends?
Running it on latest version of Ubuntu and its working fine for me. I've used "Play on linux" to install it.
Can you elaborate further on how you got it to work? I'm new to Ubuntu and linux stuff and I'm so in love with it so far...I just need instructions on how to get Steam to run so I can talk to all my game developing buddies.
I'm on the same boat just installed. I just followed the wiki on Steam:

Its the first section under the contents
With Play On Linux (POL)
One "easy" method of installing Steam is with Play On Linux (http://www.playonlinux.com/en/). First download the latest version of PoL
http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html
and install it. Then run it by typing: "playonlinux" in the console and click on "installer", select "jeu" or "game" and next, select steam, next, say yes for all next steps, and here it is, Steam Is installed ! Enjoy.
POL does install Steam but the Tahoma truetype font is not installed correctly therefore not allowing you to view the normal text on the screen. I have just tested it on Fedora 9. I can view the default Steam webpage and the community page no problem. But the login text is invisible, the My Games screen text is invisible. NOTE - Tahoma font installs properly on Backtrack 4 Pre Release. (Tested 6/15/09) NOTE - Tahoma font can be installed by copying it from your windows pc to a flash drive and then putting it in a hidden folder (on your linux pc) named .fonts (you may have to make the folder0 in your root directory (Tested in kbuntu 10/16/09)
The Tahoma font can be installed using winetricks with the command winetricks tahoma without a windows install to copy it from.
I wouldn't reccomend it for playing the games though, I've had trouble installing Counter Strike Source
Ah, thanks. So, chat works fine? You can actually communicate back and forth? Based on my google searches, that's the biggest problem.
Just messaged my friend and it seems to be working fine for me.
Also if you want to play games i'd recommend installing XP/Vista/7 and dual boot linux
I have my dedicated gaming desktop home and my social networking notebook. Desktop runs Win7, this little notebook runs Ubuntu with all chat applications. Steam being one of them.

Thank you so much! I got Steam running, Facebook Connect, Twitter, MSN, Skype...perfect! You have made my 3G laptop so much more worth it.
For those who want Steam on Linux:
1) Get "Play on Linux" (google it, you'll get the files from there)
2) Select "Steam" from the "Install" menu in "Play on Linux" program
3) Let it install, then run it.
4) Whazam, everything works.

Or just download steam, install wine, and install steam?
POL is simpler for people new to linux though.
In-game overlay is broken.
Someone messaging you while playing a game will fuck your shit up.

Hasn't happened to me at all. So far it's only been launching games that didn't work.
Is it faster or slower on Linux?
Faster for me through PoL. Odd.
that is weird, it makes me suspicious

The only that is "hard"(as in I need to google it and can find it in 1 second first result) is that the installer is a .msi .
Was more difficult back in the day with all the fonts and other bullshit.
Wine 1.3 + Steaminstall.msi = flawless steam install on Ubuntu.
Yeah, I got steam to install correctly on Ubuntu, but I copied the game files from my windows partition to the ubuntu side. Apparently they don't work the same way? TF2 and HL2 don't launch. I'm going to end up deleting the files and re-downloading them on a clean game folder.

Highly recommended. :)
It's running smoothly, considering this particular laptop has 512mb RAM.

Just Steam Friends, or playing games runs well too?
I don't play games with this computer due to the RAM, so I haven't tested any games. Steam chatting works fine and that's what I'll use.
Steam and Source-engine games (and WoW) are pretty much the best things that run in wine. It still gets at me that it isn't native, though...Would be really nice if they had native Steam and you just added "wine" in the launch options of the games.
Is it faster or slower on Linux?
Faster, but I got random crashes in TF2.
I didn't think it would be so easy thanks guys. I've wanted steam on this piece of shit for some time and just haven't bothered because I figured it'd take a bit of messin with.

You'll have to run a command in terminal to install with Ubuntu. wine msiexec /i xyz.msi
xyz is the location of steaminsall.msi .
That's for any noobs who might want to know.
It took me forever to get TF2 to run correctly. I can't run it in dx9 yet, or if at all.
I also have no sound...
The day we get Valve and other big companies to start supporting Linux...

That PoL is much better. Steam without fugly fonts!

In-game overlay have been fixed just some months ago. They work REALLY well now. You can even watch youtube if you install flash in wine!
If you wanna play flawlessly, I highly recommend the nvidia proprietary driver with crossover games, they work really well with source engine games!

The new crossover update is nice with it's new update system thingy. I like reading the compatibility database to see what works and what doesn't.
Faster, but I got random crashes in TF2.
I get those anyway on Windows...
