Hello Facepunch. Today I just need help finding some antivirus, because recently Norton has been using 3 out of my 6 gigs of RAM while my PC is idle. What I would like. -Good Protection (that "rivals Norton's protection or is better." is what my dad says) -Won't use much RAM Not much to ask. I'm just trying to find the best. Thanks all. P.S. I've known for a while now that Norton is terrible. My dad is just blind to technology and is one of those "computer illiterate people that think they know things" people.
I can't think of anything much worse than Norton. also avast
microsoft security essentials is free http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx
It uses Windows Firewall and doesn't seem to be in the way a lot. I'm cool with it. [editline]12th October 2011[/editline] 712K Memory usage
microsoft security essentials is free http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx
Free and is so much better than Norton
ARRRRRRR- i mean avast
Microsoft Security Essentials paired with Comodo Firewall works great, and it's free.
Avast! or MSE. Those are your best free options.
You could download some of that fake AV stuff that says you have 500 viruses and will only remove them if you shell out £30 and you'd have more protection than Norton, its a pile of shit. Avast or MSE, MSE integrating seamlessly with windows.
I use MSE paired with Avast, and have Malwarebytes installed just in case things really get out of hand.
Essentials. Lightweight, effective, free. AVG and all the others are unnecessary bloatware. If your PC is that infected, re-format or re-install windows.

Microsoft Security Essentials. I can't really recommend anything else.
I use MSE paired with Avast
You have 2 anti-virus programs? Jesus dude uninstall one of them for Christs sake (I'd say remove Avast). Not only are you wasting resources but you're also risking generating conflicts between them.
I use MSE with MBAM just in case.
If you father really wants an AV what costs money, get MBAM full version. Otherwise, MSE or Avast! or Comodo.

Not only are you wasting resources but you're also risking generating conflicts between them.
I've ran them side-by-side for years without a single conflict. And they don't use much resources at all. They're both non-intrusive, don't require much RAM usage, and do their job. One scans at noon, and the other at midnight. I've had great success with both of them. I install them both on all my clients machines, and nobody has had any issues of any kind.
MBAM represent
Alright, I'll try Essentials. Also, my dad is the one who for some reason loves norton. Although I'm pretty sure he just went to Best buy and said "I need antivirus!" and they said "Here have Norton." v:v:v
For free MSE Works good and easy to use. If you want to pay I would say Nod 32. Used it for over 1 year and loved it. Never got a virus or had any problems. Why I changed to MSE? Wanted to try something new and cheap. MSE was there for me.
Comodo. Because Comodo.
Avast. Because AVAST YE HARDIES, LAND BE FUCKING OVER THAR
I use MSE, it never gets in the way. Doesn't have the best virus prevention but whatever, I don't download blind.
MSE with Malwarebytes for the heavy cleaning.
Comodo will turn your computer into a fortress.
If your father is willing to pay then get MBAM. For anti-viruses choose MSE or Comodo Internet Security since they're both free and work just as well as Norton in the level of protection. Personally I use MBAM and Comodo Internet Security. [editline]13th October 2011[/editline]
Alright, I'll try Essentials. He should focus his money elsewhere.
I use MSE because I've seen it pick up infections that Avast! hasn't.
I use MSE because I've seen it pick up infections that Avast! hasn't.
Like Google Chrome Who knew this all was a trick from google to infect our pc's [editline]13th October 2011[/editline]
Comodo will turn your computer into a fortress.
Comodo is good, but it keeps asking about EVERYTHING "Are you sure explorer.exe is not a deadly virus?"
Its funny how ofter explorer.exe is a virus or infected somehow. Them viruses with clever names, I once had something like "windowsfirewall.exe"
